Thread to talk about off-topic posts occurred on the main thread

With all due respect, the answers are there right in front of you, in that thread and this one. You have regular members, not moderators, telling other regular members that their post does not belong here or there or whatever.

Warn those members that they are not moderators and have no business telling other members what goes where. By all means delete the content, but letting regular members police that forum, when their comment is just as off topic as the ones they are condemning, is ludicrous.

If something is off topic, why are these regular members even commenting on it? Just leave it be, but they don't. They take it upon themselves to tell another regular member that their content is not appropriate for that forum, just report it and move on. I didn't cite instances because they are so numerous it would take me forever.

You have to only look at the other comments to know that this is occurring as others are saying the same thing I am. Saying that growth isn't relevant makes no sense either since you literally have a place for people to apply to join this group. All I'm saying is you have members in here who have a serious case of the high horses and nothing is done about it. The forum in question literally has discussion in the title, yet discussion is not only discouraged, but flat out silenced. Either change the name of the forum or allow people to do what it states or have another topic that discusses what does or does not constitute discussion. Which again, is ludacris.

We do not tell users to tell other users what they should or should not post, they do that on their own, just like anywhere else, and their posts are deleted the same that any other unrelated content is. I'm sure they're all aware that moderators do frequently delete unrelated content and can see for themselves what is problematic, but there will always be instances where someone will make something worse while intending to make something better. As you can see in previous posts, we've made that point multiple times. If you're implying that we should be banning members for posting off-topic content, or those who take it upon themselves to comment on that off-topic content, that's not something I would want to do, as it can cause users to become afraid to post something on the off chance that the content isn't considered relevant, even when it is. I've seen people stop talking altogether in group chats, forums, discord servers, etc., and it's not the kind of environment I want to create.

As for discussion, it's obviously encouraged, I don't see how you could take that any other way. There's a definitive difference between relevant discussions and irrelevant ones, if you're posting in a thread related to the removal, pending removal, or risk of games on steam, we just want the posts to actually contribute to the context. If someone asks if a particular game is at risk and someone replies with a reason why it would be, that pushes the discussion forward and overall contributes to the thread. If someone posts that a game was removed and someone replies saying they wish they bought it, that's not as much contextual discussion as it is personal commentary, which doesn't actually help anyone, which is the purpose of the group itself, helping collectors (and those interested in becoming collectors) to become better collectors. If it was a single channel chat room, there wouldn't be a problem with people making comments here and there, but as you know, servers tend to create multiple channels for different context. I'd have no problem with people creating threads in the public forum about being upset with missing a game, because that would then be a proper place to discuss it.

I'd also like to know when anyone has deleted relevant posts since you brought that up twice so far and haven't given an example, unless that comes down to what you personally consider on-topic.

I will be leaving this group. The notifications that I get regarding removed games is not worth seeing the hypocrisy that has steadily been getting worse in this forum. As I said, I was a forum moderator/server administrator, a pretty high up one at that, for over 10 years. Mid-level out of three different levels. That means that I had the power to ban people from our forums and ban people from our servers and run our servers.

The way this forum is run is not conducive to growth nor does it look good to people looking on from the outside. Again, if you are not concerned with growth then, so be it. However, if you want people to join this group and participate, this is not the way to accomplish that, whatsoever. When you have regular users openly back seat moderating and nothing comes of it, yet you have others who post things that are still on topic and the posts are deleted, there is something wrong. I've learned a lot from this group, some good, some bad. Thank you Balduran, for showing me the ropes.

The purpose of the group is not to grow, if you mean in terms of membership, as membership does not really come with any perks. It basically just tells people that, at a given time, you had a relatively number of owned removed games compared to the total. The purpose of the group is to share information, simple as that.

I asked you a few hours ago what you meant by deleting relevant posts and instead of answering me so I could see what you were talking about, you just brought it up a second time, which doesn't help the problem if there is one. You said that it doesn't look good to people on the outside, and again, didn't say what the problem was or how it could be resolved. I can't just know what people are thinking, I need to know there is a problem before it can be addressed, and constructive criticism is always more useful than complaints.

If you choose to leave, that's obviously your choice, we gain and lose members on a regular basis and as long as they meet the requirements at the time, any previous member can rejoin, it's not an issue.

Removed and At Risk Game, DLC, and Software Discussion
I know that this already seems to have been handled well by Balduran, but I figured I would make a quick appearance here just to address a few concerns if possible.

Yes, this is a discussion thread (all of the previous threads were discussions as well, there were no dedicated thread, just fewer people posting which made topics more focused), and as a result, it can get a little off topic here and there, and some people prefer an open chat style of communication here to a more restrictive moderation system, but there definitely needs to be some balance. I'll clean up some of the posts here in a bit as the relevant side-discussion was moved, but I think clarifying a bit of what we want to see here vs what we don't want to see here would help a few people out. If there are any comments relevant to what I'm saying now, please address them in the thread created by Balduran, I'll be following that post as well.

What We Would Like To See:

X game was just removed.
X game is getting removed soon.
X game that is about to get removed is having a final discount / had a price drop.
X game is at some sort of immediate risk because Y.
X developer/publisher did something fishy and their games may be at risk.
X game is at general risk and temporarily free.
X game just got removed / is about to be removed, here's a link to the cheapest available source.
General discussions about why a game may get removed or why the game was removed.
Questions relating to a particular at risk game or removal.
Relevant links (steam store, steamdb, external links) for everything above.

What We Try To Avoid:

"Damn, I wish I bought that game."
"Glad I already bought that game."
"That post is off topic."
"That post complaining about an off topic post is off topic."
"This post was made already, but I'll post it again just in case." (Mentioning something again that's coming to some sort of deadline soon is fine if the original post was from a long time ago.)
General comments about free/cheap games/dlc that aren't at any particular risk, as there are tons of free games given away on a daily basis.
Posts completely unrelated to steam games.

There is a little latitude for what would be ok to post to make everyone happy (these are only guidelines, not strict rules), I'm not going to start deleting every single post I see that doesn't explicitly state a game is going to be removed, or already has been. I would rather encourage people to post rather than discourage it because it will only allow us more access to information overall. I would just appreciate less of these conversations that seem to derail the topic altogether. I obviously read this thread incredibly frequently, so if there are any real problems, I'll take care of it as best as I can, when I can, and if there something serious I should be made aware of, you can comment on my profile (or report the post, but save that for extreme circumstances) and I'll take a look.
