Developer trying to trick my curator into reviewing their game
Low stakes, but it still feels like unethical behaviour from a dev.

I have a curator that reviews games made by Hungarian developers. Today I got a curator offer with a machine translated Hungarian letter asking me to favourably review their game. (Luckily Google Translate is terrible with Hungarian, so it's easy to spot that it wasn't written by an actual speaker.)

I went to their website and it's all Korean-named guys living in Korea, so nothing to do with Hungary. I sometimes get irrelevant curator offers, but this is the first time where it felt they were trying to trick me.

Dear,

We recently developed an All-In-One Sports VR that integrates 10 sports games into one and released it on Steam.

I am sure that the promotion of our game through your great Curator channels will be of great help.

So, I'm sending you a Steam code that lets you play the game, so try it out and recommend it to your followers.

Looking forward to your warm and favorable reviews...

Once again, thank you in advance for your warm evaluation of'All-In-One Sports VR'.

Best Regards,

Swan, Appnori Inc.

Well, of course a dev hopes you will recommend their game. It's rather common in curator copies to have this type of invitations.

I don't think they were trying to trick you. Probably just really bad communication on their part.

In any case, the Steam Curator rules override any of such requests the devs may make. You're always free to give a game, the rating you think it deserves. So don't worry much about it.

I referred by trickery for them to pretend they were a Hungarian dev, rather than the favourable part.

To be completely fair, according to the English tranlation of their poor Hungarian translation of Korean, they never claimed to be Hungarian...
They may even just have mistaken your curator for a curator for Hungarian audience, and not only about Hungarian games.

Idk, it says that it's about Hungarian devs right in the tagline. If they got as far as to know which language to use, they have seen that the curator is not for them.

Like I said, probably misunderstood your curator, due to their translation.
I don't think they tried to mislead you, again, they never pretend to be Hungarian.
They just made the "effort" to write you in Hungarian-ish.
So they may probably have been interested into your curator, even if they did not understood your area of expertise.
In the end, just my 2 cents.

This seems like a very polite developer, not any attempt at 'trickery'.

"Looking forward to your warm and favorable reviews..." is the only mildly unethical part, but putting effort into contacting you in a language you understand surely can't be criticised.

At first glance, I largely echo what the others are saying, however, you always have the right to refuse the copy if it doesn't meet your criteria for your curation. I'm assuming that you have done so by now, and this is largely a nothing burger.

I agree with this. I also have an issue with the previous sentence, but assuming that he has refused the key already, we can't necessarily make any opinions as to the nature of asking to review the game favorably.
