Kind Quotations.
My friend is depressed, need some kind quotes to cheer him up. Also he seems to be inteligent, he just doesn't embrace it. So make it complicated!

One who is kind is sympathetic and gentle with others. He is considerate of others' feelings and courteous in his behavior. He has a helpful nature. Kindness pardons others' weaknesses and faults. Kindness is extended to all - to the aged and the young, to animals, to those low of station as well as the high.

Ezra Taft Benson

It was a lot harder than it should've been because Google kept getting it confused with some book.

Do not stir from the sadness in your heart, for it is only there for a time. Do not give up on your story, for it must have both ups and downs. Do not think that you are doomed to sadness, for nothing is truly just a tragedy. Keep your spirits up, your heart pure and your mind always running. Keep your body up, keep your voice clean, and set everything else at ease. There you shall find a path which few shall follow, and like a fish down a stream, you should follow where it leads. Do not let words break you, for they are no threat. Let no one punch you down, for inside they are weak. Let your heart, your mind, or your soul command your choices. Do what you think is right and just, not what others tell you is right and just. Keep asking questions even if they are small, for knowledge can guide all. Keep these things in mind every day. When sun shows or if rain falls, these things follow people where ever you go. Realize them or not, people think of them all the time. Enjoy it while your life lasts, for death in the unanswerable. Enjoy what you enjoy, and try something new from time to time, you might be surprised. That is all I say, but there is more to be told. Think about it more, for wisdom is gained by yourself and can't be learned.

Truly fascinating that this last post tells us to do what we want rather than what others tell us, yet there is hardly a sentence (if any at all) that doesn't tell us what to do. The derp is strong in this one.
With respect, and generally speaking, there are two basic kinds of depression: endogenous (from within) and exogenous (from outside). They are not mutually exclusive. The former seems caused by a chemical imbalance in our brain. You may not have a worry in life and yet depression may strike. Quotes, hopes, or friendships would do nothing at all. Medication would be required to treat it - and note that I hate reliance on medications, but in certain cases there isn't much of an option.
Exogenous depression is caused by things that happen in our life, and depending on the intensity of our woes, it can take a lot of soul searching to overcome it. In my case - and very long story put short - I was eventually able to discern what worries were my own and what stresses were implanted by those around. Sometimes those who care the most about you may also be the ones who unintentionally hurt you the most.
Is it not okay for you to feel the way you do? To think the way you do? To be whom you are? Whose place is it to determine any of it: yours or somebody else's? Should it be a joint effort? Clarity of purpose was my relief from depression. I know what >I< want to live for, whom to live for; all other goals flow from that. Goals that I set, rather than goals set by someone else.

There are many people who follow that idea. However, the day that you are born, a rule has already been set before you. Since you were born, you will die. Then comes more rules brought on by your mortality. Then comes rules from the previous generation that effects what you can experience. Then comes rules of what you must use in order to get items. You can set goals for yourself, sure, but those goals are set up from the past and the present. You can not become King of the Roman Empire, or kill Hitler when he started his dictatorship, or become as famous as Steven King before there was a Steven King. Goals have already been set up by someone else. You just get to choose which ones you can pick.

I think that is a very good point, and completely agree. In my personal opinion, I would say that there is no "freedom of choice" as most people would think it, in that we don't actually get to choose our beliefs and actions. When it comes down to it, our actions are already determined before they happen. After all, we are not truly arbitrary or random. There are reasons behind our actions - the question is, can we determine what they are?
Our thoughts and beliefs are determined by what we learn from the earliest moment we start taking things in, well before we're even self-aware. No idea just spontaneously happens. Every consideration stems from, or is influenced by, what else came before it.
Our actions follow suit. We have all sorts of likes, dislikes, fears, goals, hopes, etc. There is a complex mishmash of factors underlying our every action. We do not randomly choose what to eat, wear, do, think, or say. We may think, "Oh but it is my choice whether I eat an apple or an orange (or both)". But oh, it really isn't. It is within our ability to consider the selection, but whichever option we take is determined by our preferences, goals and expectations, which were already defined.
That is, of course, no excuse to act as we please. Predetermination does not negate ethical and moral conduct. People's physical and emotional integrity remain very real factors, and respect remains a reasonable expectation. Though I'm sure we all have our fail moments. Reading again my last post sure makes me face palm. It was kind of brisk~
Dont worry, you will find a way, if you cant find one, then make one.
