I generally consider when a trade has 1 or 8 of an item in the trade slot that it is being used as a placeholder. For example, if I see a trade offering 1 or 8 ref for a key, I instantly understand that they are obviously just using the ref to signify that they are paying in it. It is when people use other numbers that I feel confusion and misleading occurs, generally in the same example as Sam gave.

Perhaps, I suppose. I have notes on by default, so I use Ctrl F to find trades, rather than looking at the pictures, however, considering that not everyone does this, I can understand this rule.
