Discontinued Hats

TL;DR BATTER’S HELMET, SOLDIER’S STASH, PYRO’S BEANIE, DEMOMAN’S FRO, FOOTBALL HELMET, MINING LIGHT, PRUSSIAN PICKELHAUBE, TROPHY BELT and FANCY FEDORA are gone from the unusual pool, crafting, timed drops and the Mann co. store in two weeks.

One interesting point is that unusuals for these will never again be uncrated.

The only source of these items will be old crates.

How do you think this will affect the TF2 economy? Why is valve doing it?

It's an interesting thing to do, I'm not sure of their motives. This may have a small effect on the Unusual values, but many of the discontinued hats are very low tier, like the batter's helmet and the football helmet.

I don't understand how having more hats which cost literally nothing to produce that are bought in the Mann Co. Store would ever be retired.

I think it's their way of trying to get people to buy a bunch of these hats. They will probably start doing this every now and then so that their sales in Mann. Co. pick up.

Thinking about this from an economic perspective, I have two guesses as to why valve would do this-

These hats are old enough that their value as items to sell in the Mann Co. store had decreased such that it would make more money to take them out of circulation. I think it is likely Valve is probing the waters here, if this works, they will probably come up with a canon way to cycle sets out of circulation as the next one comes in.
It's that academic economist doing something to see how the economy reacts.

I've been saying for 3 years or more that they should do this, it makes perfect sense. None of these hats have any real rarity attached to them while you can still uncrate one. There is a massive oversupply of all hats, and way too many types out there, I think this is a great idea, one of the few from valve in 2 years or more.

If they made it a regular event. The discontinued hats would not go stagnant or be over produced. And best of all it would make some hats very rare because the window of production was short. Making all hats only get produced for a unknown limited time could make the hat trading market become more frantic. Adding a little excitement to trading Hats is missing IMO.
