DotA 2 gifts are worthless, right?
Am I missing something here? how did these even come to be if the game is free to play?

I see a lot of people trying to sell these for keys, and offering on trades with the guise of it being an awesome deal. I firmly believe anyone trying to pawn these things off is knowingly trying to scam people who don't know the game is free.

Why do these even exist, they're just causing problems in the trading community. like I said, am I missing something? What are your thoughts on the matter?

I think people buy dota 2 gifts because its somewhat instant, instead of waiting on the waiting list to take the survey, I haven't taken it so yeah..

Yep you are missing something. Dota 2 is currently the most popular game on Steam by far even though it's still in beta. Dota 2 never was free, it will be free but that doesn't change the fact that you couldn't sign up and get in the beta just like that. You either had to fill a survey and hope you'd get chosen to receive a free invite or buy the early access from the store for ~$30.

Since it's such a popular game there's no question there's a huge demand for it. People would pay up to $10 or more to play it early. That's a reasonable price considering most players put hundreds of hours in it already. Since there was a limited supply of invites getting one wasn't easy. Of course that all changed with the recent waves from Valve, supply now outweighs demand so they became pretty much worthless.

One day it appeared in my games list, I decided not to question it, and yes; they are worthless

That's not the game, it's the spectator client.

You have to install it in order to watch matches.

That's a 5 month necro right there.

The $30 thing you saw was a starter pack. The actual invites are given out like candy.
