I bought Rainworld expecting a harsh platformer and what I got was the most immersive survival game I have ever played

Rainworld is a world with a harsh environment with harsh bodies of water, bottomless pits, an ecosystem where nearly every creature wants to eat you and has the means to stop you, catch up to you, out manoeuvre you, even the plant life has adapted to taking hold of the player for nutrients, all tied together with a harsh rain cycle that keeps all of the ecosystem moving fast before rainfall.

Creatures are designed to simply hunt for food and then find shelter before rainfall, they will use any tactic to chase or deceive pray and go in for the kill.

One of the first frustrating moments that opened my eyes on the game was when I had camped the exit of a pipe to snatch some food coming through the pipe, I then tried heading back to hibernate only to have a lizard patiently waiting at the other end to instantly snatch me, I had just died to the same tactic that I was utilizing. This moment was frustrating but it opened my eyes to just what this game was about.

You are not the main character, the world is not designed for the player, the player simply has to survive.

And to tie together the stellar art design, presentation and procedural animation is a simple but stunning story with 1 set piece in particular involving 1 region with an abundance of colourful flies that had me shocked when i reached what was at the centre of it. This moment has become my favourite moment in any media, this game suddenly untangled and I had come to realise that I was barely scratching the surface.

And then I was stunned yet again when I had made the decision to continue my climb to find what could even be up here. The sight was to stunning for me to even realise I was above the clouds, free from the rain, I could have a moment of piece.

This game is my favourite game of all time, it is a hard game to get people to try but I think the game at least deserves a look, rain world may be the first and last game of its type to capture such a sprawling ecosystem in this way to be believable but still otherworldly.

Some recommendations:

If you are feeling frustrated but still want to experience the game, don't be afraid to play as the MONK instead of SURVIVOR, the game throws less enemies your way and you need less food, sure it might not showcase how harsh the world is but any experience of the game is better than none.

If the game is too harsh but you still want to experience it, I suggest trying the Jolly co-op mod (which is being made official with the upcoming dlc.) The game lacks the loneliness playing like this but makes up for it with the frantic moments of running away as a little cat tribe, frantically trying to save your siblings life or both trying to stay quiet so the creatures don't notice you.

After getting all achievements I can confidently say that Rainworld is my favourite game of all time.

And it just might become yours if you give it the chance.
