I decided to try out Despelote after seeing some positive coverage and boy am I glad I did. Despelote is an important reminder that despite the whinging of internet losers culturally diverse stories are strong because of that diversity, not in spite of it; Despelote's narrative is only able to be told as effectively as it is thanks to the specific cultural experience of its authors. One of the things I really appreciate about Despelote is that all the voice acting is in Spanish, which adds a lot to the immersion of the game. Its artstyle is super unique, and makes the world feel exciting and fun to explore. One of the things I really like about Despelote is how it will often play with your attention in order to place you as the player in the same distracted headspace as the character. Without spoiling too much, there's information revealed at the end of the game that undermines the core conceit of the game, but I really appreciate that they included it. I think that part of the plot ended up speaking a lot to me, and adds a lot of interesting nuance to the game's thematic core. I also really love the ending, and feel like it does a great job of wrapping up the story on a thematic level. Despelote charmed me, and I really hope that people recognize how special it is sometime soon. (9/10)
