Best arcadey shooter in a very long time. The gunplay is great, and on higher difficulties I felt like enough of a glass cannon to keep things exciting even when I had maxed the skill trees.

The storyline is strong, and the arcade leaderboards are pretty fun. First time I've ever really enjoying chaining and combos in an FPS.

Intuitive, simple gameplay but very unforgiving. It will break you for making a mistake, everyone will die, and only 3 towns later will you realize how you screwed up.

10/10

This game is something very special. As far as I am aware there is not, nor has there ever been, a game quite like this.

The conventional grand strategy we have come to expect from Paradox is all well and good, but the true heart of this game is in its roleplaying. Whether you're arranging marriages for your children or murdering someone else's, the interaction between characters is always at the forefront.

While it may seem an intimidating game at first, I find the emphasis on characters make it a lot more accessible than the other titles from Paradox. In simple terms, players are more easily able to make sense of people than numbers, and CKII is a game which caters to that excellently.

Buggy, poorly thought out and unsatisying. The combat feels like a moshpit, with the clever maneuvering of previous Total War titles reduced to a mad dash into the meatgrinder. This would be acceptable if units had reasonable morale levels, but unfortunately the majority of troops break and flee at the first sign of trouble. Missile weapons are also highly inconsistent in their level of damage, with most Roman troops walking through a hail of stones, arrows and javelins with no ill effect. This makes the tactical choice of infantry, ranged and cavalry options meaningless, because infantry is ALWAYS the best option.

These issues, combined with the honestly annoying garrison mechanics (enemy cities with no defenders always manage to pull an army out of nowhere, making it impossible to gain any real strategic advantage) mean that playing Total War: Rome II feels more like a chore than a game.

As someone who started playing the Total War series nearly 10 years ago, I am disappointed that this is the direction CA are taking their games. A series which once stood for tactical depth is quickly becoming an unappealing slog. They might be able to turn this around, but don't hold your breath.

The game that GTA IV could have been. Smooth interface, fun combat, and a decent story.

Early Access Review
The depth of a simulator but with much more open and accessible gameplay than most.
