It's a good story game. Not a good open-world one.
All the problems have been listed a million times - the games writing, cinematic direction and all that is very, very good - and can carry the games issues on it's back. But, the gameplay itself is boring - tedious and lacks a lot of basic features, and functionality.
The game has been gutted - the music is very underwhelming and generally the game is going to have to pretty much completely reinvent itself to be good. This isn't a patch job like most people will tell you, this entire game is going to need a rework for it to live up to any notion of being a good open-world game.

As an RPG - it's a farce. You have as much freechoice and personal direction as those telltale games, which is to say - none at all other the same thing, in two different ways. In 'fallout funny reddit snarky reference mode' or just straight laced.
Some choices in sidequests and missions can let you stray down your own sort of path, like being able to allow some dudes who edit snuff-porn to live, or to stop their operation and so on. But. You really aren't levelling and creating a character you want to be, like in Fallout NV or other actual RPGs. You are playing the person the Studio written. And the tiny, insignificant details are yours to fill in with very little effect to anything else.

If you don't enjoy the game now. Then you never will, because this is it. No amount of patches or fixes are going to improve the writing and gameplay. Some sprucing up can be done and such, but this is just not an RPG game about making a character. This is just a step-by-step story.

I have 105 keys on my keyboard, and yet - I have to have dodge, sprint and backstep binded to one key. Even if I rebind it. It comes as a threesome.
I'll sprint when I want to roll. Roll when I want to sprint, and in all 23 hours (at this time) I've never actually backstepped if I pressed the button.
What the ♥♥♥♥.

Edit:
I bought a Controller. The game is great.

Pay 6.99 to bring carrots to a donkey, and create a camp that doesn't really do anything but disappear after you made a vague, dialog choice that practically deletes all the progress you've made during the DLC.

EDITED REVIEW

This is truly an amazing game and a complete MUST PLAY if you've never played it before.

However, the Steam version is now completely broken and no longer functions. If you purchase this game there is a large chance you will be unable to actually play it. I'm not sure whats changed since 2020. As, I was able to play through the entire game with some patches and fixes.
But. Now the game is entirely broken and will crash at start-up. EA has never addressed or patched it. Support tickets copy&paste the same basic instructions, that do not work. And it looks like it'll stay that way.

It really should be taken off the Store, which is a shame. BUY at your own risk. It's a gamble.

A really good amount of fun, but really has no replayability - and for the price, that's really not enough.
Considering the game has a base management system where you manage your own encampment, collect gear to reward to your partisans and has missions you can send them out on - I really don't know why they've not included a unlimited mode with randomly generated missions.

At 25.99 at general retail, and 23.39 at launch. I'd avoid the game until it gets cheaper really. The storyline is completely linear, and unlike something like 40k Mechanicus - the game has practically nothing new but more challenges in difficulty on a second run.

Maybe if it goes down to 10 - 15 pounds I could recommend it. But, for the money you could pick up something that'll last you much more longer. Which is a real shame.

The warhammer 40k games have been stricken by cashgrabs and all the rest of it for awhile now. But, Mechanicus though a little cheap in some areas - is a amazing step of quality, and a sign that 40k games are starting to actually become good again.

Mandalore sent me.

Right. So, I'm quite a big fan of the original game - and was looking forward to see how they handled the 'racing' mission on the Simulator and hardest difficulty.

But. I actually since playing the game, have noticed that the racing missions is less of a race and more of an 'on-rails section'.

The cars aren't physically represented in-engine - they are on an a rail that artificially makes it so they are at a constant pace, cannot be knocked off course of swurved out or - easily passed by. I don't mind the idea that you can't just tackle a car to the sideline to cause it to crash, but it's so poorly balanced that cars are doing corners that if you attempted at the same speed would literally spend you flying into the trees outside of the level barriers. It's pure plastic restriction ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stuck right at the beginning of when the story actually gets good to force you to outplay the 'refund' timer.

UPDATE:

Managed to get into 4th place in the first round, so it teleported three cars near me to ram and overtake me so I could see all the really 'cool' premediated crashes. What a pile of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
