This game is filled to bursting with repetitive grindy content, by the end i was begging for it to be over, the story is also one of the weakest in the entire franchise with set-ups that don't pay off or illogical conclusions, the fact that Bryce spoke Engrish in the Japanese dub did make me laugh though.

Buy this game on deep discount as even though there's a new city it still reuses assets from previous yakuza games very heavily while having the protagonists make the stupidest possible decisions at nearly every turn.

The boss design in this DLC is kind of atrocious, instead of making fights that are challenging but fair, they have given every boss a waterfowl dance equivalent, the slow methodical pace of combat does not exist in this DLC's boss fights because every main boss is an F22 Raptor spiraling at 600 mph while dumping all of its ordinance.

Really its a matter of scope, fromsoft seems to have forgotten what kind of game they are making here; ornstein an smough in DS1 are a good point of comparison, they are difficult for sure, but they also have clearly defined windows for healing and punishes.

It really seems like the main bosses of this DLC have only one move in each phase that allow you to punish for only a single hit safely. Once you figure this out it is just a matter of waiting for the opportunity and poking the boss until it dies; which IMO has always broken the "fun " of a boss fight.

I don't like the scadurtree system, every other DLC from has made, had no problem using the base lvlup currency. It makes little sense that they would turn off the progression system that is core to a stat based RPG.

Fromsoft needs to stop trying to one-up the most frustrating fights in the game and focus on making something mechanically engaging beyond spamming dodge until its finally your turn to attack (once)

Nioh 2 still has the best soulsbourne combat of any game i have played and it really comes down to allowing the player multiple options for how to engage a boss/ turn combat in your favor. Nioh 2 has a smaller array of weaponry, but a vast collection of input-based skills that are always accessible instead of the simple button mashing of R1,R1,R1; R2,R2, L1 (etc)

I know we aren't going to get burst counters in ER, i'm fine with that, but a lot of these fights lack clear and well defined punish windows and the few they do have are good for one attack. This makes the process of rolling around like a loose tire on the freeway looking for a window extremely frustrating. The Ebb and Flow of combat is very out of whack and in the pursuit of maintaining the pedigree of "hardest bosses in gaming" there is too much invested into creating visual spectacle before considering its effect on gameplay.

The most enjoyable part of this DLC is the exploration , most of the main bosses feel more akin to late stage bosses of the base game. (this is where the wheels fell off the base game for me)

I have been continually disappointed by FROM's lack of innovation when in comes to their core combat system from DS1 until now, and the sheer ubiquity of action games trying to ape the souls (or sekiro) formula. Not to mention the the stagnation of action games on this one central concept for what feels like 12+ years now. (Give me more Hi-Fi Rush and Sifu ; less souls please).

So while I'm playing and sort of enjoying my first time through, like the base game i can't see myself enjoying this nearly as much upon replay once the novelty has worn off.

Early Access Review
Unplayable framerate drops on any graphics settings when stuff starts going down
On top of that the framerate doesn't just cut; it also cuts the sound intermittently, making the whole game sound like a skrillex song.
This happens regardless of which graphics API i select

This has been fixed for me, game is great and huge despite the early access tag.

Bugs seem to have been ironed out, the game is very fun right now with a huge diversity of units/ tactics. I'm not an expert at these games, but i have a decent amount of playtime in COH 2 and this one has many qol improvements that make the multiplayer very enyoable. I waited for this game to go on sale, but YMMV.

I Wish That I could give this a sideways thumb

Unique, beautfiul huge and awesome

Severe frame drops and horrible frame times in cities and sometimes random tunnels.

Transactions that are basically the equivalent of DMC 5 red orbs that you can buy (all items can be found in the game world and the game is best played without paying extra anyway)

When this game works its so good though and its honestly one of the most unique rpg's ive ever played.

A few people i know are just outright crashing each hour; so YMMV.

To everyone complaining about not being able to save scum during a run, boo hoo this game nails its vibe and there are plenty of options to tweak the difficulty into games journalist mode where missions will take almost no time.

What have they done to my boy?
Words cannot begin to describe my overall disappointment what they have done to my favorite video game ever, but as they are the only medium in which a human can express anything i will deign to try.

Lets start with Tone, the tone of this game is completely all over the place, the one line left in about bingo is all that remains from the first game. The game takes itself so very seriously now, everything is gritty, darker, "realistic" with leon being the worst offender, whereas before he was hyper competent goofball, now leon is a void of a personality, i would go as far as to say that there is no personality left for Leon to fill other than uber serious cop guy. Ironic that if this version of leon was the one presented on PS2 there would probably be zero love for the character at all. because while re4 remake leon "completes" alot of the same events as the original he does so with absolutely zero style, zero charm no stupid quips or absurd humor, whereas the the original RE4 leon would be running away from a giant mech of the antagonist, narrowly escape with his life before turning around and delivering the cheesiest line possible. Leon in RE4 felt like a charcter who belonged in the absurdity that surrounded him, and him being completely unfazed by everything thrown at him made him the memorable character he is today. This is the whole reason that the game was remade in the first place to capitalize on nostalgia for a vastly superior game. Capcom sanded Leon down to perfectly average video game protagonist #78.

I have to ask who is this for? New players aren't going to remember this version of leon, he's a wet noodle with no charm.
But aside from our leading Man, the world has changed alot too, someone at capcom went down the list and struck off every set piece that they deemed too goofy and in the process contributed to making re4 significantly less memorable. the boulder run in the village, the lava room, the bulldozer, the speeding car, mecha salazar, the spike room, the laser room, cable car sniping, and so many more. Its these critical moments where i kept asking myself surely this will be in the game right? No it will not, without all of these amazing varied set pieces the game feels less like RE4 and more like another bland third person shooter that apes the combat mechanics and nothing else. By removing these set pieces capcom has effectively removed the soul of the game.

Okay So what do we get in return?

They put durability on the knife (why?)
because there is a parry (why?)
because all of the cool game have parrying (how will you balance it?)
Your knife breaks and you have to pay to get it fixed or you can't use it. (WHHHYYY)

Parrying is honestly a cheapo trick they coudn't figure out how to balance in the RE4 sandbox without a band aid fix. Most of the time my knife was broken while playing, in the original it was a really poor fallback option baked into your kit that could be used to escape some tight situations.
In this game parrying is at the core of a lot of encounters and those moments where you are without your knife you are basically playing original RE4 at that point anyway, running to avoid attacks and not being able to block.
There had to be a better way to balance this, i had to have spent 10% of my run's currency on the damn knife repairs.

Then we have sidequests, which are literally the most boring copy paste objectives ever. Remember the blue medallions in the first game? Get ready to do that 6 more times across different areas of the game, or kill 3 rats in different hallways or areas, or fight a slightly powered up version of a normal enemy, no thank you.
This game fails to capture the originals charm in almost every conceivable way, this at the end of the day was product created with money in mind. All of the removed content has been supplanted with non-memorable generic third person shooter drivel.

I'm so very disappointed to say that no one will talking about this game in 20 years, I can't even tell you what happened in the castle in this game as i literally cannot picture it. This game will not create ravenous fans the way the first did because it lacks the originals energy and charm.
The Gameplay is the only thing that has "improved" and even that is debatable.
What a waste, i could easily see people playing this and not understanding what all of the hype about the original was.

its a kind of bland open world action game with an HP skin over it, watch dogs legion comes to mind with how i don't feel compelled to keep playing the game at the 20 hour mark, i feel like i have seen and done all that the combat has to offer. Enemy variety is pretty abysmal for something set in this universe, goblins, dark wizards, spiders, armored sentinels and wolves/ dogs are all that you will fight in the entire game, and the combat falls really flat once you have seen all of the spells and used them, flipped and levioso essentially have the same function, but are both trumped by accio, its just kid of bland, the visual spectacle does not hold up the fact that the combat boils down to blasting colored orbs at other folks and colored standard fantasy enemies.
