Art Style, Gameplay, Good Devs, Optional Micro Transaction, Tons of Content, Regular Updates, and Pleasant Music
Few other games have these combined qualities.

Booting the game only to have it crash sucks. Rebooting the game to crash again sucks. Logging in and hitting the Claim Button on the resources you needed to progress only to crash and lose all of it sucks. Randomly crashing when you finally get to play sucks.

It has fun content but the bugs make it hard to recommend.

The game is a fairly solid game. You build towers and defend several objectives throughout the map. You get to intervene as a hero and can play with others. That said the game really is only technically free. They have time gates which can be overcome but, your inventory space is premium. I don't mean premium as in most important, though it is, I mean premium currency. Yeah they made inventory space a real money transaction in a looter game. Multiple in game mechanics force you to this end. Lots of resources, upgrades, gear, make it an inventory management game if you don't pay up. Really scummy ♥♥♥♥ right there. It's a grind game but the grind IS the game so it's not a real complaint. You get an RNG dice roll to see if you get the shard you want at the end but can use the daily/weekly login rewards to bypass that RNG. Despite all that I can recommend it. Not as a Free to play game, buy the starter pack and max your bags for you own enjoyment, but as a simple, easy, overall fun experience. Really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that inventory space is in essence mandatory pay wall regardless though.

The Devs have kept working on the game and kept promises they've made to their fans. The game has been a labor of love that they've came far way with. They continue to make it a better fighting game and try to keep it balanced. They still have work to do but's it's pretty good so far.

The only reason to play this game is if you want a Macro RTS game where you can play the Micro of the FPS. I enjoy it but I can't recommend it. The game features asymmetrical balance which I like alot but feel isn't implemented well into the game. It has several very grind intensive walls, which can be avoided by paying real money. The RTS is by far the largest gate mechanic due to it requiring multiple high Rank characters to be able to take part in. It has a subscription element which allows you to get More Credits per game, More XP, and allows each character to wear 1 additional badge. The additional badge is quite a large bonus. many use it to add a medal that reduces all damage taken by 15%, which is onlky available to veterans who've ran around alot or people with more money than sense. You can't buy your way to the top of every problem however because most of the ribbons, a time and skill gate, would cost a Stupid amount of IRL money to actually buy out. The graphics, the game engine, and Team elements are all outdated. Many features long promised are only now being implemented.
All of that being said however it's one of those "bad" games I really love. It is a free game and you might find you can enjoy it too. They recently have started to address some of their issues however and I might be inclined to fix this review as they address more issues which are far to many to address here. A good example is they are trying to make the new players game less getting farmed by vets with hundreds of hours and a bit more fair. I wish RETO luck with all they are doing to improve the game.

At this time I strongly recommend NOT getting this game yet. Many people are experiencing issues alot of serious issues and they have yet to be resolved. At this time I've spent over 3 hours just trying to fix my game to run correctly and combed over many other experiencing a host of issues. I imagine that many of the issues will be resolved in the coming week. However it is a sad truth that in it's current state Imperator: Rome will be a gamble for you if it works or not.

If you decide to roll the dice I urge you to first check the Recent Updates tab for this game and read through the Known Issues and FAQ to see if you are at risk. Reading through the comments will help you too. Quite a few issues are not listed there as well. However I'd urge you to first check it regardless.

I wish to address one issue in jest. This review was written day one of the release and will more than likely be changed later. I do however wish to point out that the game developer mentality of releasing a broken, or otherwise unplayable or unenjoyable, game at release is a negative trend that ought stop. At this point it is a largely accepted practice that is overall still hurtful to both the games sales and user base. I "know" that Paradox will fix the largest amount of issues with this game. The current state of the game does still reflect poorly on them regardless.
