The game is genuinely fun to waste some time on. There are goals, one based off your character (such as taking photos, getting signatures on a petition, doing drugs, etc.) and another is randomly assigned to you (secret agent, spy, etc.) which really don't matter, but it's a roleplaying game after all, and it's fun to try to talk your way into victory. You can have some fun making up a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to feed people, or trying to locate your secret agent partner to work together in some cases. Sometimes you get people who quit out and don't know how to roleplay. I actually had one guy leave the game because there was "too much rp". If you just trade with players for everything that everybody needs for their goals, then there is absolutely no point to this game. If you enjoy improv antics and don't mind the trolls, this game is really fun.

I love this game. Everything about it has an old-school feel that blends tabletop RPGs with NES graphics. There is a lot of grinding in this game, but that's what RPGs are about. You choose your initial characters from an assortment of people who each have their own unique bonuses, then pick a class for them based on those bonuses and what you want in your party.

If you make challenging enough fights, they require a bit of strategy. My paladin typically casts a shield to reduce damage by 50%, then increases his threat to draw attention, while my rogue stuns people for 3 turns (thanks to items I have that extend the time by 2 turns). My mage will either AoE the entire group or fireball for a burning DoT. My cleric has a powerful single heal, decent group heal, an offensive move called smite, and a debuff on 3 enemy's attack strength. My newest addition, the berserker, goes berserk (I can't choose his targets but he gains extra damage and regen) and has passives/equipment that boost his crit rate above 30% while also allowing him to heal for 63% of his total damage. And those are just my 5 classes, there's quite a few more to unlock as you play.

The grinding part comes in two forms. You'll find yourself moving back and forth to caves often to get grindstones to upgrade your blacksmith. You'll also want to fight a lot, and grind quests to earn gold. Gold can be spent buying yourself some equipment at the blacksmith, or on a whole bunch of upgrades to the room you play in, the table you play on, etc. Purchases made will give your party bonuses, such as higher RNG die rolls, more gold/exp, boosted stats, regen, etc.

There's always something to do in this game. It can be tedious at times, but the humor of the game, including comments from the game master and party members help to ease this. Overall, I think it would be a worthy addition to anyone's library who is a fan of old school RPGs.

I paid $20 for this game in 2014, and gave it a negative review. Now in 2016, they want me to pay $10 to buy it a second time, or I can't play. I regret paying for it the first time, why the hell would I buy it again?

This also means everyone who supported this game in early access (there were $20, $60, and $100 packages) no longer own the game, and must also pay the $10 release price, despite some people having already paid 10x that. Daybreak essentially slapped everybody who financially supported this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ during it's pre-release years in the face, with a landmark-sized ♥♥♥♥.

2014 Review Below

If you want to play a beautiful but lacking version of Minecraft, this game is for you. As for me, I was looking forward to the PvE elements that were promised, and still have yet to be delivered. A month ago they introduced PvP, which was a start, but there's only 3 generic weapons you can use in it, and unless you have a lot of friends with this game, good luck finding enough people to get a match. The game is pretty much dead, and this isn't helped by the fact that quite a few people who do want to play can't because of bugs. They finally did release footage of monsters at E3 2014! There's 6 of them total, and half of them are plants. Also, 2 of the mobile monsters are basically recolors of each other (white wisp and red wisp).

The only part of this game that is enjoyable is the crafting. You can definitely get creative and make all sorts of customized voxels for your plot. The resource collecting is tedious as with any game, and requires a ton of resources to do anything useful. Then after you've built something, you realize that all that's left in the game is staring at the beauty of your plot or other people's plots, or mining for hours to pay to maintain your plot. That's right, if you do not pay in-game resources to keep your plot, it will disappear, with all the effort you've put into it. Welcome to Landmark!

Early Access Review
My friend and I love the new co-op addition. After building ourselves a decent little defensive outpost, we went along the shore, searching for cannibals with our modern axes decked out with feathers and teeth, compliments of local wildlife and residents respectively. We found a group of 8 or so cannibals huddled in a circle, and crept close using bushes as camouflage. This group had found a flashlight, and were entertaining themselves for hours with it's light beam. My buddy and I decided to end their curiosity, running out of our hiding spots to engage. I threw a few molotov cocktails, which mostly missed but caught a handful on fire, while my friend begun a club vs. axe solo fight with one of the uncooked guys. The cannibals circled my buddy, and I noticed one nude female in particular trying to creep up behind him. I yelled "1V1 BRO" into my mic and chopped her up nicely. After a pretty lengthy fight with the locals, we ended up crafting a bunch of effigies on the beach using their heads, arms, and legs. Then to lighten up the mood a bit, we threw a gazebo on the beach, next to the random body parts.

tl;dr

This game is definitely tougher, scarier, and a bit more immersive in singleplayer. But a co-op survival game without player opponents like Day-Z or Rust, so no worries about getting ganked after you've worked for hours to build up. My only complaint is that currently co-op games do not save, but I'm sure that will be fixed soon as they update fairly often.

I'd give it a solid 8/10 as it stands. Good fun, especially with a friend. And it can only get better.
