Take 2 interactive basically killed the modding for this game. And will probably do the same for future games.

This game is all about creating and maintaining an entire self sustaining automated industrial factory system from the ground up starting with a pickaxe, all while balancing resources and preventing the planets inhabitants from destroying everything. Despite this game being in early alpha, it is already incredibly entertaining, polished and very playable providing long playthroughs with tons of content and an expansive tech tree and crafting system.
