So now that I’ve completed the initial story up to the end of season 1 of Alicization, I feel like it’s fair for me to write a review and I’ll point out the first few problems right away. I also provide a link to my gameplay below.

- I didn’t have any performance issues, and I’m assuming that’s because I turn off V Sync when I start any brand new game.
- I noticed the camera is absolutely garbage. Sometimes it would freak out and look directly at the sky when I’m attempting multiple commands between party members, and speaking of which
- Your party members are pretty much useless without you providing any input. Unlike Hollow Realization where you can sort of shape your party members into their roles, this game doesn’t make them do anything. I constantly have to switch in between them to make them NOT just stand there.
- There is a colossal amount of dialogue in the first chapter (The first season of alicization). Some people may like this, but this is especially noticeable in the swordcraft academy and ending. I kid you not, in my 20 hours of playtime I’ve probably only played about 5. There's so much dialog that I would simply put the text running on auto and leave to go do things around my room. I managed to make lunch, eat, and clean my room in the span of one dialog. Seriously. Triple A prices to make your players sit there and not play the game. Incredible work Bandai.
- The combat is smooth but incredibly slow. By the way Bandai, that’s just stupid. Considering that quicktime events are now part of duels and how ridiculously fast those are, it doesn’t match the pacing of the battle at all. God forbid you get knocked up in the air because you’ll be in the air for over two seconds.
- The animations are LAZY AS HELL. I actually sat and watched the cutscenes so far and my god was I disappointed. There were so many scenes that could have been completely CG, or better yet SHOULD have been. There are some dismemberment scenes in the anime where in the game they don’t even bother to remodel the character and just lazily angled the camera to hide the limb. Come the hell on guys. If you were going to attempt a 1:1 story up to the ending of chapter 1, why not set the standards to DBZ Kakarot levels. Some scenes needed the extra life that the anime breathed into the series with beautiful animations and sound effects. This game has neither. Take God of War (2018) for instance, you're paying the same price for almost cinematic cutscenes whereas this game has static characters with camera pans during cutscenes.

Aside from my complaints, the only redeeming quality of this game is it's visuals. The graphics are beautiful and it's nice to be able to integrate towns with monster areas for once. However, it doesn't take away from the fact that Kirito's hair has some unnecessary pearlescent on it. As someone who is attending art school and continuously provides critiques for art choices, I just have to ask why. The character models don't match the surrounding areas, and maybe that's due to the really stupid design choice of making all of the character's clothing glossy.

TL;DR: The game is basically a bad visual novel of the anime and Bandai was really freaking lazy when they made this game. It’s not nearly as in depth as the other games and to be honest I’m kind of not interested in continuing past the first chapter. Hell, there was literally an HOUR AND A HALF of dialogue after the final fight. My $14 purchase of Hollow Realization was much more worth than spending $80 on this half baked game.

I'll be streaming all of my gameplay for this game. If you need proof, here is my playthrough on YouTube:

all good points IMO. At the early stage of the game combat seems to be slow on purpose it really picks up after the game breaks away from the show. The camera is getting better with the latest patch as well as many bug fixes, to make your followers useful you need to customise them in pretty much every menu status skills bond and memory it kind of does this for you but its no good if you have any idea in mind as to how you want them to act you can add gear to skills and customise combat skills in the skill tree as well as sword skills with gear in the equip menu. Also its an SAO game talking to ppl gives layer and context and even player interest in the story and the world of the game but the game has a skip all button if thats more your fancy the game gives you tuts on alot of stuff but for the most part you will forget it and/or have to figure most of it out on your own which i like.

Totally fair points. I agree to disagree in this sense, and will most likely update my review once I get back into this game.

I do also think you are judging the animations too harshly because you experienced the anime. Hollow Realization doesnt have an anime following its story. I agree that the examples you used are cases of poor animation, but I'm sure you'll agree there's also plenty of good examples, even in chapter 1. If you compare them to the animations of other games, and in some cases even the anime.

Considering the current issues I dont disagree. However I would still say recommendation of the game outside of the issues, should come after experiencing the full game. Not just its first chapter.

I also fail to acknowledge that the SAO games were never the greatest in terms of story or depth in the first place and maybe I might have judged the game too harshly. Regardless, I stand with my decision of not recommending the game especially with it's current price tag.

Maybe I expected too much out of this game having completed Kakarot and Hollow Realization, but I approached this review with the impression it left on me. I'm sure I'll come back to the game at some point but right now I can't seem to be impressed knowing that there are thousands of other AAA titles with a $80 price point which does deliver right off the start.

When it comes to the animations however, I should have been more clear about that. I was only referring to the story animations and to point out a specific part, I was really not impressed with the back and forth dialogue between Chudelkin and The Administrator. I found that panning cameras with models simply doing an idle animation loop completely lazy and I bet there are more scenes just like that further on in the story. I also felt that there were scenes that didn't get the impact they deserved due to that lazy animating, like Kirito vs. Lady Fanatio . I'm also not sure why they omitted the fight between Levantein at all considering that was integral character growth for Sortiliena.

You have a lot of fair points, but I wrote the review with the mindset of my impression towards the game without really giving it the benefit of doubt. I trust that there is a lot more content that I haven't experienced given that I only completed chapter 1. I noticed that there was a difference in amount of story vs. gameplay immediately after chapter 1, unfortunately for me the merits of sticking through with the game don't outweigh the initial impression on me. I agree that I made an unfair assumption of the game having lack of depth since again, I only know up to the beginning of chapter 2.

All that said, I think its a good thing that you mention gameplay in your review. Most of the other reviews only discuss the (many) optimization issues the game has.

Just that there really is a huge difference in this game between chapter 1, and the rest of the game.

To me ch1 feels rushed. IThey failed worse then you say, as they could have taken the chance to render the scenes the anime skipped.
In the game we did get, ch1 is really only the introduction. Both in terms of gameplay and story.

The combat, while slow at first, becomes faster once you become used to it. Skill connect, dodge/jump attack removes ending lag. Switch characters givesaccess to more SP for skills. Without these, the combat does feel painfully slow. With it? It feels a lot of fun and quite smooth to play. The quick time events are almost universally hated. I can't believe they are part of the game either. Con for sure.
tl;dr: in many ways there is a very large gap between initial impression and full experience.
