One of the best games I've ever played.

The writing is really good, the soundtrack is amazing, and you can shape your character with dialogue choices however you want.

It's actually the first Warhammer game that really hooked me up. I never liked the general idea of Warhammer universe. I still don't like how it works, but I'm fascinated about the world, and that's only thanks to this game.

The game is featured in current Humble Choice, and I buy them all, because I usually like some games, and the -20% discount for Humble Store often gives you prices lower than historical lows. When I saw Humble Choice July 2025, I though it was pretty bad month - not a single game I would consider buying. So I decided to try the headliner - Rogue Trader. Just after a few hours I knew this game is for me, and I bought Season Pass while it was on sale (the first DLC is integrated into the base game and starts during Act 1 - I already played a part of it, and it's amazing).

So, what's the game like? It's a cRPG - a lot of text, the most important dialogues have voice overs, but you need to get used to reading a lot - it's basically like reading a really good book, but you can make choices which shape your character and the world around you. Even choosing the order of doing missions have serious consequences with some places left helpless without help, while other being saved just in time. And when you go to the other place later, you see how you affected it, with text highlighted in light blue in dialogue - when you hover your mouse cursor over it, you see which of your choices caused it.

And when it comes to the choices itself, you can make decisions based on the rules and values set by the Empire - with blind faith and devotion - that's Dogmatic approach, trying to help people and be a good person, sometimes being naive that the decision can actually help - Iconoclast, or just indulge in being a scoundrel/villain, and do everything for yourself without regard what happens to other people. You can also do mixed or neutral choices - usually there's plenty of dialogue options to choose from.

Of course, it wouldn't be much of a cRPG without companions and combat. You get to know your companion pretty well - there's plenty of topics you can talk with them about, and there are companion missions, although I think I only saw one or two so far (not sure if the 2nd one was actually a companion quest). You can have up to 6 characters in your party, and you can choose who you want to take with you on a mission - the game asks you each time before you depart. When on missions, the combat is classic turn based approach, and it works really well. The default Normal difficulty level is way too easy, so I switched to Daring, which is one level higher. It's still pretty easy, but you need to think a bit about character development and the tactics during combat, so if you're not careful, a party member can get downed fast easily when you fight more enemies, or just more powerful enemies in general. With well developed characters, you should have no issues with going even higher with the difficulty level, but achievements requirements are up to Daring difficulty level, so going higher is only good if the game becomes too easy. Keep in mind, the difficulty level also affects skill checks, so it affects dialogues as well. There's also space ship combat, and space ship development, but it's too early for me to give my opinion about that.

We should also mention the graphics. The art style is amazing, and the graphics itself are pretty good, but they're not perfect. It's a cRPG after all, so you're supposed to use your imagination. The dialogues include descriptions of characters gestures, but rarely there are animations showing that - sometimes you can see a character bowing or saluting, but usually you need to feel the gaps with in your mind with static characters just standing in one pose on your screen. Important events have actual in-engine cutscenes, though.

At the time of writing the review, I've spent around 35 hours in the game, and I'm pretty sure, there's still over 100 hours left to complete the playthrough, but the game is so addicting, that I don't mind it at all. Time flies fast when you learn about the fascinating world depicted in Rogue Trader, while shaping fates of many souls encountered during your journeys.

I can't imagine using VR headset for PCVR games without it. You can quickly check time, how long is the current session in specific game, frame times for CPU and GPU to see where's the bottleneck, which makes it easy to adjust graphics settings for VR games. For wired headsets it also has cable twist tracking, and you can set it in a way that indicator (under your feet) is transparent when the cable isn't tangled at all. Highly recommended.
