Its a hard game. There are a lot of things to account for as youre playing. The combat is the meat of the game so look into that before you purchase. The flavor, aesthetic and RPG elements are all excellent and I can only say that i would like more.

Its a good game but there is no reason to ever buy this because they put out a whole new version NOT AS AN UPDATE shortly after giving this some love. Double dipping on the nostalgia money im sure. Dont buy this. If you want, buy the Definitive Edition.

TL;DR- BUY IT ON SALE

SECOND REVIEW (66hrs):
Well i was wrong about not coming back. Saw some promotion for the third game that looked exciting and noticed there was a sale for the first two. After playing the hell out of this for a week or so I have to say this is improved in some ways that are notable. The Mortal Empires campaign is satisfying in the challenge and complexity. There does seem to be a much improved balance for scaling difficulty into the late game. But im going to leave my recommendation as a No because you shouldnt pay full price for this game. Its worth your time, but the DLC requires you drop a bag of cash on it that isnt appropriate. Buy this on sale.

FIRST REVIEW(20hrs ish):
Tried this on the free weekend. I was a fan of the Total War series till Rome 2. Ive been skeptical since then.

Short Pros; the game looks good, the Warhammer theme is excellent, and the troop variety is huge.

Short Cons; AI is bad. Diplomacy is still way too basic. Army size limitations are pointless. The strategic and tactical levels seem shallow and brute forcing things is often as good as any nuanced strategy.

My main reason for giving this a thumbs down is thus; the game is unable to stop you from blobbing and taking over everything. So it has mechanics for spawning in armies and factions within your territory around cities that dont have an army near by. Garrison forces are basically meaningless unless the attacking army is substantially weakened which is never the case with these spawned in armies. It is a way to prolong the game and make it more difficult in an artificial way. That is the major issue here; fake difficulty. Beyond the early game, this isnt enjoyable. Its a slog. I wont be back to this title.

While i find the expansions to be annoyingly priced, the base game is excellent in its challenge, and atmosphere. The replayability surprised me. Just the few scenarios given are unique enough when paired with tech tree and goals that prevent you from being able to do everything you want to all in one scenario.

NOTE: I didnt play much until AFTER the 1.8 update.

Im really enjoying this game so far. Playing fairly casually in a campaign game as is recommended. Looking forward to diving into mods and a career game when im done.

Im going to just go ahead and finally call it. I want to like this game but its not been fleshed out like it should be. If you want to play something like what this game SHOULD be, go play Stellaris. At least that game has the DLCs for it on discount every now and then.

Im not paying $20 more for this unless its adding a hell of a lot more than i know is in these DLCs. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Stardock.

Better than regular DoTA. Love the ability to play mobile.

Updated: The game has been abandoned. Its unfinished and weve had no communication about it being worked on in years.

Im still salty about the ♥♥♥♥♥ release and all the disappointment.

Update: This game is still not an improvement over the original. While it makes some changes in siege mechanics, diplomacy, and city management; none of these things are remarkable or even an upgrade. I still firmly recommend against patronizing Total War games all together. This was an incredible failure to deliver.

This is the best game ive ever played. Im in love.
