if you were given the job of CEO of a private prison company, what kind of CEO would you be? would you rule with an iron fist with extensive punitive measures, or would you try to be compassionate and rehabilitate the unruly mob society has sent your way? Would you try to profit on their misery? Or would you go out of your way to make them comfortable (nice flooring, decent meals, etc.)? This game has everything you need to find out, with plenty of personality traits for each prisoner (prisoner traits, names, etc. are either randomly chosen or, if you choose to take in one of the predefined prisoners from the crowdfunding campaign, some of it may be preset); basics like cells, canteens, showers, power grids; learning programs like rehabs and vocational training (of course, you could also just have them make license plates. Cheap labor is cheap); and more!
and of course, you can also reverse the roles and test out your own prison with escape mode. So you're really getting two games in one, in a sense.

update, post-acquisition (Paradox Interactive semi-recently acquired the game from Introversion Software, to the din of mixed feelings in the player base): well the game hasn't gone to hell in a hand basket yet, so that's good. Sure, they've started to release most of the game's content updates as DLC, but it's not like you have to pay for it as long as you've already purchased the base game (at least, if you're not stupid like me and forget to claim the DLC when it comes out). I'd rather them do it this way than increase the base game's price as they add completely new content. Furthermore, Paradox has been a lot more interactive with the Discord community than I remember Introversion ever being (kind of funny, given the names "Introversion" and "interactive"); that's not to say Introversion was completely quiet (they did an AMA on Reddit not long before passing the baton), but I think they could've done better, like Paradox is doing now.
Tl;dr: still a great game, the acquisition did nothing to tarnish it, my worst fears never came true :-)

I am considering amending this review, on the basis of the really bad negative reviews the DLCs are getting. Sure, DLCs rarely get "overwhelmingly positive" reviews, but some of these reviews are quite convincing. I'll give them each a chance before I change anything (steam's refund policy appears to cover DLC from what I can tell), since they could just lack the QA resources to detect things before they launch, but just... let the buyer beware!
