Proteus is a brilliant idea that only excels in its visual execution. It perfectly captures the kind of world once portrayed using just a few, two-toned pixels displayed from an Atari 800. A world that you, the viewer were forced to imagine rather than witness in high definition glory. The problem is; there is literally nothing to do within that world expect to wander its hills and valleys scaring off groups of animals while listening to the whimsical but unimpressive, procedurally-generated music. It is best described as a tech demo and it would make a fantastic screen saver akin to the classic Windows 3D maze. The one thing it is not however, is a game.
24 hours inside of Proteus would offer no more enjoyment or depth than simply watching its 2 minute long trailer video. And that is possibly the saddest thing I've ever written in review.
While most indie games leave you wanting more for their own good reasons, Proteus leaves you to starve on an empty island for want of anything at all.

I like reading comments on this review. The person that complains about you never played it an hour. The game doesn't last an hour. Who tastes food for 45 minutes? There's someone that says your guide is curiosity. What happens if you're not a curious person? Like if a game requires a controller to play. Guess you won't get much entertainment out of it.

This game is just a cash grab that was put together in a weekend. Its a shame where games are going. More art and wandering than fun and entertainment. I bet if it was multiplayer people would be so bored they'd result to killing one another, because there's no other objective than exploring.

I see your point geggis, and technicaly (sry for mispells) its true. games that are FPS are mostly clicking on people, you could have a blank screen and do the same thing. but in this.. "game" you wander, a 10$ wander however is not sufficent. In doom you click on creature from hell! Technicaly. so we veiw it as that? **** no! We veiw it as blasting a demon on Mars in the face with a shotgun! So, From a technical standpoint, your claim is vaild, but i dont think technicalites is going to win over anyone here.

I agree Crispy. and pop, I dont think a tranquil walk is worth 10$, buy the binding of issac, FTL, any other game thats the same price! Hell, TF2 is better than this, (im guessing-no im not) and its free!

Spoilers, but the game does have an actual progression and ending, aside from wandering around. It takes some looking to figure it out but there is a narrative.

There is stuff to do... You can complete the game!

"there is literally nothing to do within that world expect [sic] to wander"

Proteus is all about wandering and doing "nothing". That is the idea -- you can even sit down in it!

'Doom is a brilliant idea that only excels in its visual execution. The problem is; there is literally nothing to do within that world except shoot.' See?

I totally get why people don't and won't like this -- I'm fine with that -- but to say it's a "brilliant idea" and then miss the point of the game so monumentally is just... wow.
