I've had Subnautica for about a week and I'm really enjoying it so far. It is a great mix of progression and a bit of fear. The undersea-scapes are beautiful, and the flora and fauna are very creative. The sound is a big part of the experience for me. When I am in a biome I am not familiar with and I hear aquatic sounds - something obviously big - it can be frightening! Although I am a big fan of combat-based ganes such as The Elder Scrolls or Mass Effect, it is refreshing to play a game where fights are usually best avoided.

Subnautica is all about exploration. There is a lot here to discover - new areas, lifeforms (some of which are deadly), alien artifacts, the story, new equipment to build. It's a lot of fun for me to take off in a new direction into an unexlored area and uncover its mysteries. It can also be a bit scary :-)

Another thing I really like is that you have options to play the game as you want.

Freedom mode - You need to worry about health and oxygen, but food an water are not taken into account
Survival mode - You also must manage food and water
Hardcore mode - Death is permanent
Creative mode - No story requirements, health, food, oxygen, hunger and thirst are igmored and crafting is free

I dislike muling, so for me being able to ignore food and water is a plus. It lets me concentrate on the parts of the game that are fun to me - exploring, staying alive, crafting and the story.

Pros
  • Great views
  • Awesome sounds
  • Interesting progression
  • Crafting
  • Different gameplay types (survival, creative, etc.)

Cons
  • Some scenery "pops in" from time to time
  • IMHO I wish the contorls were a bit better
