In regards to the mic volume dropping out - when does it do that? If it does that at startup of VA (and subsequently the speech engine) it is indicative of the speech engine compensating for however it was trained. If the volume was too high when it was trained, the mic volume will be lowered (conversely, the volume will be raised if the mic volume was too quiet during training). Although VA does work best when the speech engine is trained up properly, there *is* a setting in Options to work as a, 'band aid' - Go to the System/Advanced tab and go down near the bottom to find, 'Prevent speech engine from changing mic volume'.
If the volume is just randomly set, it's possible it could be a third-party app, so, be on the lookout for that.
