DOOM Eternal has been by far one of the best single-player FPS experiences I had a chance to engage with.
Frantic murder-fest with surprising amount of depth and strategy to it. The game required me to, pardon the phrasing, "git gud" to a degree where I had to shed some of the bad habits that other FPSes allowed me to get away with (like still selecting the weapons from weapon wheel), and yet it never felt unfair - every death was due to my oversight and complacency.

The multi-player part, I can't comment on, as for me it's been completely broken since release - I could not connect to any matches, matchmaking kept hanging indefinitely, and the like.
I should specify here, I use Linux as my main operating system, and I don't dual-boot, thus I can't say how much of that is due to my OS of choice, and how much of that is multi-player being broken. If you're looking at titles to play with others, there are likely better titles out there, but I personally didn't lament it that much; my interest was strictly in single-player portion.

A word of caution:

With Update 1, id Software has snuck an invasive kernel-level anti-cheat into the game, but has done so in such manner that none of the Linux users were able to access the game at all - not just the multiplayer component, but anything.
Update 1.1 has removed the anti-cheat following feedback, but keep in mind it might happen again, and if you've non-standard machine, or play on Linux, or if you just don't want invasive software with unlimited permissions snooping on your system, you might not be able to play the game any more.

As for now, if you're looking for good single-player shooter experience that will push you and your skills to improve, I can recommend DOOM Eternal wholeheartedly. If you're more of a casual shooter player, or are going for multiplayer scene, you might want to look to other titles.
