Sol Cresta is an interesting example of a game trying to catch two types of consumer but pretty much failing to catch any. On the first hand its a sequel to a game which first entry was released back in 1980, also coming back to its roots after 3D remake of Terra Cresta, that killed Nichibutsu, on the other it wants to appeal to a new player that didnt played or didnt put much time into shoot'em up genre. By no means its not a bad game, more of a disappoitement perhaps. Maybe, its just me, a point of view of hardcore shoot'em up player that tried a lot of arcade titles such as Gunbird, Chouyikuu Yousai or Twinbee as well as new games paying omages to this amazing genre such as Touhou franchise, Sky Force or Raiden. To say i expected more from Platinum Games is like saying nothing, they did tons of amazing games after all like Vanquish or Legend of Korra, recently, they lost the good track and this is an example. Graphically wise game looks okayish however, i expected the ships to be much more detailed, it looks like a combination of psx/ps2 pixelart for backgrounds, snes/psx enemies and nes player models. It looks great for an eye but its far from the greatest. Gameplaywise though, i cant believe how easy this game is. Maybe i got better into this genre after my last attempts of beating ikaruga, but this game does not give me any challenge at all. Thats why i said this game targets a new to shumps user, because if you are new to this genre, you will like it, although the levels are too long imo. It serves good as a introduction to amazing world of shootem ups, ngl, but if your are an fan of this genre, this game will be like walk in the park for you. A very boring not suprising walk in the park. From positives, since to this point it was pretty much kicking poor fella, i like the ship combo system for ultimates, the fact that they do different type of damage based on how you combine ships and the fact it reffils based on your performance in game, unlike bomb system that is limiting your strategy in many other shumps. Voice acting and anime sprites are great too. Range of characters in story even though they are a bit cliche, same as story itself, is cute, on that point it really feels like a 90's game with these cringey death sounds or that one guy with a hamster. It have its charm and many may continue playing this game only due to it. UI is solid too, combining nier automata with darius games. Overall, although its not a masterpiece as i wanted it to be, its not a bad game either. Those who wants to get into this genre of games, will like it surely!
