in spite of CA doing everything they can to ruin their games and putting everything they can behind pay walls, the game's a pretty decent platform for the Divide Et Impera overhaul that makes the game playable.
A bunch of reviews are complaining about difficulty/limitations/decision making in the game, and a bunch more are complaining that women exist but those complains tell you much more about the player than the game and can be safely disregarded (and mocked because they're stupid pople).
Actual complaints are paywalling factions and other questionable DLC releases ($4 for blood and gore??), and a few longstanding engine problems with special units like dogs and chariots. The base game is very sparse, but luckily this game is a great modding platform to give plenty of life to your game
