I've played the series since they first appeared and I'm an X-Com fan, you may take my recommendation with a grain of salt :)

The first one (UFO Defense) was a blast. It is one of my most treasured games of all time. It involved a LOT of micromanagement, from the "which kind of ammo" for certain weapons (explosive, incendiary, armor piercing...) to buy (yes, you need to actually buy ammo), to the soldiers selection based on the stats (recruitment involved). You even have to hire scientists, engineers and so on. And then you have the "proper" game, the action. OMG, it was difficult, but really addictive.

XCOM EU is a different game, not just the same one with better graphics, easier interface and "dumbed down" micromanagement. No. A different animal. A beautiful and different animal. Is more focused on the action (TBS)... and its really well executed.

I like to play it on a slow pace, enjoying every bit of it. Right now, I'm around 30 hours, and maybe 50% complete... and I'm not tired of it AT ALL... can't stop playing it. You have to understand that 30 hours is a lot to me, because I can only play about an hour per day (if I'm lucky)... and add my backlog to that... 30 hours is really good, I really have to love the game to reach that.

If you liked the original X-Com, trust me, you'll love this one. Maybe you'll miss some aspects, but you'll like all the new perspective. If you don't know the originals, don't worry, you'll love this one even more

Firaxis did it once again. Bravo!
