To me it was worth it but some may disagree, I fully understand why but I bought it to support the developer more than to actually gain gameplay and in the end I actually had a lot of fun with it, I say it's worth it, especially for the coloseums as they add a lot of challenge to the game, and also the story that you get at the end is actually rather interesting even though if short.

NieR Automata - A Masterpiece that I almost Refunded

Now you might be wondering why I was about to refund this game, obviously the main cause being one of the worst ports that I have ever experienced on PC, it is absolutely terrible to the point you can’t even fullscreen the game in 1080p, but (this is a complete game changer… literally) I wouldn’t run the game without a mod, this mod is called FAR and it's just a requirement. FAR fixes the most important problems that make NieR Automata have really bad performance and also some stupid problems like the full screen. Anyway moving on from the port lets get to the actual review.
P.S I am extremely glad that I haven’t refunded this game as it is by far one of the best story driven games I have ever played… keep reading and you will find out why.

Performance
The FAR mod fixes most of the performance issues but the game still very rarely struggles to run on a smooth 60 FPS on Max Graphics for me and I know other people struggle to achieve that constant 60 FPS as well. There is 2 reasons for that, firstly the game ain’t greatly optimized but for what it is it ain’t that bad, secondly… this game sometimes makes you question who on earth would of thought to put so much action into a single fight scene, like honestly I am extremely impressed that in most of the fights I actually keep the 60 FPS when there is literally a war zone going on in the game.

Visuals
As Nier Automata is a 2017 title you can’t say it stunning for its time, but you do have to keep in mind that this game was designed for the PlayStation 4 audience and not the PC (yeah I know it kinda sucks that you get nearly the same graphics as PS4). The game still looks great in my opinion, it definitely isn’t ugly and it really has its own personal beauty in its graphics.

Music / Sound
Firstly I shall start with the Voice Acting, as you can obviously tell this is a Japanese game, and I actually can’t talk about the Japanese dubbing as I haven't actually played the game enough in Japanese to be able to judge it (also I can’t speak Japanese), the English dubbing though in my opinion is really good, the voices chosen for the characters really fit and the acting behind the dubbing is really professional and honestly enjoyable to listen as well as immersive.

Moving onto Music… Wow, just wow, I can say that the music is just outstanding in every aspect. Music in any game is a key feature, and it ain’t easy to give it character and an original feeling after so much has been already done in within the gaming industry, this game has hit a jackpot in its musical design, the way that the songs suit the situations, the way they transition and the way they just sound and feel while you are playing makes NieR Automata’s soundtrack a true masterpiece on its own as it carries so much feeling and emotion with it, you can tell that these soundtracks were made not just for the purpose of the game but also to alone be significant enough to carry a story with them alone, the vocals to most being the strongest aspect.

This is probably gonna be the shortest part of this section as it will cover the Sound Effects. Vibrant, Contrasting and Lively is probably the best selection of words that I can use to describe the Sound Effects in NieR Automata, they really stand out and to the experience as they are really crisp and well chosen.

Gameplay
One of the coolest customization mechanics in this game is definitely the chip system, at the beginning of the game you start off with like 32 “units of storage” in which you will already have your HUD and some other basic chips installed, you can remove and add different kinds of chips for different components of hud and different abilities as well as buffs and physical enhancements, the 32 units can be increased rather easily to its max capacity 128 pretty early on in the game.

There is a very large variety of weapons available in game and the good thing about them is that the majority of them are unique with their unique upgrades and perks but there could be some actual customization to them, you can only upgrade them and that's it. Another thing about the weapons is how you equip them, there a plenty of possibilities with equipping your weapons as it will actually create different attacks and combos which I found really cool and you will find out that some characters are better with different weapons equipped in different slots. Your Pod can be described as you personal canon and ultimate, it can shoot different kinds of things depending on its upgrades and also can perform a skill ability which is a bit like an rechargable ultimate, there over a dozen of those skills to find throughout the game and not all of them are actually offencive, some act as support and some get you around the battlefield faster, they are generally cool abilities that really can help in the chaos driven combat NieR Automata has to offer.

There are cosmetic outfits in the game but they have no stat changing abilities, they are a cool touch and some are really fun to use… especially a certain one from the DLC ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The Combat in this game is truly fantastic, anyone familiar with Bayonetta and even Devil May Cry will feel at home, it is really fast paced and relies heavily on dodging and dealing damage with all the things I listed above pretty much in a really smooth and stylish way, the animation overall in this game are fantastically animated and the movement of combat just seems to flow and it all looks nice and easy when you watch it but the moment you start to play you realise that this games combat, especially in boss fights is heavily reflex based and its absolute carnage. The 3 different characters that you get to play as in this game all have a very different combat style and you have to use their specialities to your advantage if you don't want to struggle on higher difficulties as the enemies, especially in the end game can really smack you in the face. The combat is entertaining and even after 85 hours I still find it fun and not at all boring, a perfectly executed combo with some great dodging will get you really far in this game and damn you will be doing it in style.

Storytelling
I really can’t say much in this section as I don’t want to ruin or spoil anything, listen and read everything because even weapons have background stories in this game not mentioning the amount of items and archives you will find throughout the game that will help you understand what is going on and what happened in the previous NieR game. The story written by Yoko Taro will honestly drive you through a roller coaster of emotion and surprises while at all times you will be questioning life, existence and what is actually real. This game managed to make me cry like 3 times, and I mean proper cry so I must say that if you like a jaw dropping and really gripping story then you will really enjoy this little gem. I guess I can tag along the astonishing attention to detail that this game got just perfectly.

Is it Worth is?
Can you not tell by the length of this review… It deserves GOTY in my opinion for so many reasons and this is probably the best money for content game that I ever bought.

Conclusion
NieR Automata is a 2017 masterpiece of a game that will be overlooked by many. I want to thank PlatinumGames, Square Enix and Yoko Taro for allowing me to have this experience and cry my eyes out.

For the Glory of Mankind!
