Good grindy fun!

Was looking for something new to play and looked at the recently released "The Ascent" but some of the reviews turned me off of it. The aesthetic looked great, but I was looking for something challenging and a little grindy, with good weapon variety.

The amount of builds aren't astounding, there's probably 20 good builds for each of the five characters, and about 20 actually not super different guns that work into those builds. Add random modifiers to those guns, some talismans, support, and prototype gear and you have enough to imagine the build you want and keep rolling to try and find it

The action is good. The character you play's moveset isn't all that crazy, but there's proper ways to play it, and it's satisfying optimizing your aoes. Speaking of aoes, if you like not standing in the lava this game has plenty of it. In the good fights as much as 90% of the floor may be lava. They saved all the crazy movesets for the bosses.

It's not the most original videogame in the world. You'll notice tons of references and homage to other games, most notably overwatch. Some of the UI reminds me of warframe.

Speaking of warframe, this game is not nearly as grindy. In fact you can just kinda party up with someone above you, have them drag you through one of their levels, and as long as they get you up to open the chest at the end, you'll jump up about 30 levels. This is a feature of the game

That leads to this game's biggest problem. It's not popular. I'm not sure why, it's not some mindblowing revelation, but its good honest fun at a reasonable price. Did the dev sacrifice a baby to satan or something im not aware of? Either way, yes, you can play this game solo, but it is much more fun to play with others. It spawns more enemies and more types and you can get so many more numbers up on screen. I really do recommend playing with others. Thankfully, when you're selecting a mission, if there's a poker chip up top, you can just click join and be playing with others as easy as that.
