This is one of the rare games that really shows me why I love gaming. It is so unique in terms of the art and the graphics are really damn good, while the gameplay mechanics are solidly on point from start to finish. The developers have been able to make a game that is absolutely dripping with atmosphere, which is really hard to do. Every level is so unique and beautiful that I often stopped just to admire the set pieces, general art and amazing illumination. The music is absolutely on point, with every level having its own themed banger and I found myself playing this game louder than I play the vast majority of games to really vibe with the music while I was blasting monsters away. The gameplay is like Quake when it is in closed environments and Serious Sam when those environments open up. If you like fast-paced shooters, then you absolutely can't miss this one. Also, the weapon design is very cool, with a couple of totally unique guns like the leech launcher that can leech health and armor from enemies that you can pick up once they fill up and drop off or the enemy is dead. This is such a wonderful game in every respect and it is a tragedy that it has flown under the radar.

My only three complaints are that it is very short, and it left me wanting more. It took me 6 hours to beat the game, and that is with redoing a level once to find an area that I missed. The second complaint is that playing it on hard felt a bit too easy, and there was really no challenge for me throughout the game - even so, I still had an absolute blast from start to finish. This may just be because I really like boomer shooters and, I guess, am quite good at them, though there should be at least one more tier of difficulty so those of us who want it can get a real challenge. The third is that it is artificially limited to 60 or 120 FPS, which really seems like a console game choice to me - I have no idea why you would limit it and not let people with monster rigs, or future rigs, run it at higher frame rates. The second part of the third complaint is, again, it feels like a console game choice, is that there are no real graphics options other than low, medium, high, and ultra. Why not let us tune the graphics to perfection for our own PC? This just makes no sense as a PC game to me and maybe they made the game with the console in mind while the PC version was an afterthought - I don't know. Hopefully, these complaints will be rectified in future patches, as they are all easily fixable, while there is nothing wrong with the core of the game.

At the end of all this, I say illWill is an absolute do-not-miss if you like old school shooters and the talent on display here really separates this from most of these types of games that I have played. They really created something special here and I am looking forward to seeing what is in store for the team in the future.

EDIT1: I just started a play through with double spawns as I haven't gotten enough of this game after beating it the first time and it seems much more appropriate to the level of difficulty that I would have preferred on the first go around. I like that they included an option to play it after beating it once on a harder difficulty but I kind of wish it was available to me from the start. Still enjoying illWill immensely!
