I honestly really hate to say this, as I've been excited for this game since before it was even named Lone Ruin, back when it was a small arena shooter named Robes over on itch.io. That game was really fun.

This game just... isn't that game.

Sure, it's got some of the same/similar spells, but that's really where the similarities end. This game takes a very easy-to-dodge-but-highly-punishing approach to enemies which can be done very well (case in point: Scourgebringer) but unfortunately fails to lean into that approach in a meaningful manner. The best games to use this approach go about it by making difficult-to-dodge projectiles that are very easy to predict via signals from the enemies, such as an exclamation point. This game has somewhat slow projectiles that come about seemingly randomly as there isn't a lot of evident lead-up to attacks. The slow projectiles make dodging easy unless the enemy happens to be nearby, and the enemies (in Medium mode) pretty much get one-shot, though they can be pretty tanky in Hard Mode which is a welcome change for the game's structure.

I had realized I wasn't enjoying the roguelike mode pretty quickly, so I slipped over to the Survival mode, hoping it would be the same or similar to Robes or the Lone Ruin demo. It bore the same fruits as the standard gamemode -- the enemies were too easy, and the action just wasn't there anymore.

Hard Mode seeks to remedy this, and to an extent, it does -- I'll happily admit I had more fun with Hard Mode than Medium -- but ultimately it's got too much "hard" without enough "challenging". Hard Mode seeks to challenge the player by beefing up the enemies and giving the player less health, but ultimately the enemies weren't designed for that kind of game. They're very evidently designed to be swarm enemies, as they were used in the game's predecessors. Large, open maps with tons and tons of them scattered about, all trying to get a taste of the player's buns -- that's the environment where they thrived in Robes and the Lone Ruin demo. Instead, Lone Ruin utilizes relatively tight rooms with usually not many enemies. Beefing up the enemies but using them in an environment that doesn't use them the way they were designed to be used makes the game hard -- not challenging. The game is made more difficult, but the issues with the enemies and gameplay remain, they're just made to be more beefy and difficult.

Admittedly, I was super disappointed. I've played Hell is Other Demons, I've played Robes, and I played this game's demo the moment it was available. I had fun with all of them, and I know very well that Kebabskal/Cuddle Monster Games is a VERY talented game developer. I don't know exactly what went wrong in the development of this game, especially when its demo and predecessor were both very, *very* fun, but this game just isn't.

This game isn't Robes, which charmed players with intense action and good-looking visuals.

This game isn't the Lone Ruin demo, which did everything that Robes did and cranked it up to 11.

This game is Lone Ruin, and I honestly hate to say that it just doesn't live up to its predecessors.

This game is incredibly fun, adrenaline-inducing, and brutal. If I could recommend it twice, I would.

Really fun game. I'll admit that it can be annoying to have to sacrifice health to get upgrades, but tbh other than that this is a masterfully crafted game!!!

All I can say about it is that this game is amazing. It's insanely fun, and its systems only serve to enhance the experience. The only bad thing about it is a seeming lack of budget, but even that barely holds it back at all. By far one of the most fun games I've played.

Very good game, but the controls are really bad. Instead of aiming with your movement and pressing a button to shoot, you aim using right stick to shoot, making aiming difficult. On keyboard, you can't just aim with your mouse and shoot with right click or something. These controls discourage shooting, which is really bad when the game is almost unplayable without shooting.

Other than that, the game is genuinely really fun and polished.

I really like this game. It does have its fair share of problems, but I always find myself coming back to it every so often.

It's main problem is that it's pretty grindy. Like, insanely grindy. Like, almost the whole game is grinding. This is really fun at first, but gets pretty old later in the game.

Worth the money, though, for sure.

Fun game. Wish it were longer, and class balancing could be better (certain classes feel super weak) but overall a really fun play, especially with friends.
