after playing through the story (multiple times) i've found the best way to have fun in Starbound is to completely ignore the storyline and do other things like achievement hunting, base building, colony construction, (of course there are addons such as Sandbox that removes the story but i haven't tested it yet). Overall, very fun game despite its flaws.
