If you dont want to upload your mod to steam, you don't need it, but it is of course easier to share the mod, also with your friends.
The rest can be done in a text editor, no need for other tools.
I don't know exactly what the error was when you edited my mod, but I assume it even might be enough to rename the folder of the mod, so it does not link anymore to the old modconfiguration file.
And of course you can also copy paste parts of this mod into your own (so this would be "kind of" editing).
So the solution:
Do not edit this mod, but make your own mod. Feel free to copy stuff from this mod over and add your own characters. The important part is, that you make a new mod, with new mod id and your own steam upload. Then you should not receive this errors.
This "modservercreation" file is a quite new optional addition, but not mandatory. Just in case, you should check also other mods, if they throw the same error.
