If it's useful to you, I also have the original-resolution version of the heightmap at about twice the resolution of the above one (16385x5121), or even the original-original unrotated heightmap (15623x18642). If you want either, send an email to ask.software.simian@gmail.com
Thanks for sharing your method. I should give it a go... as for my Golden Horseshoe map, I basically just traced over the geodata heightmap.
