Description
After Nox created the "Historically Accurate Faction Names" mod for Rome 2 Total War with a bit of my advise, we decided to improve Attila as well. Nox taught me how to use the Assembly Kit and so I created the Attila version of our popular Rome 2 mod.

Anyway. This mod gives nearly all factions appropriate or accurate names. Some names changed completely, others were only changed a bit to improve them. You will recognize some names from Rome 2, such as the Kingdom of Armenia, Iberia und Albania, which all survived into Late Antiquity and should have not been renamed by Creative Assembly, if you ask me.
The list of changed/altered faction names is quite long (not as long though as the Rome 2 version of this mod), but I'll post it here anyway, so you can check whether or not this mod is yay or nay for you. This list includes the most important factions. I also renamed countless rebel and separatist factions to keep everything consistent, but I didn't put them in this list.

Kartli --> Kingdom of Iberia
Armenia --> Kingdom of Armenia
Lazica --> Kingdom of Lazica
Arran --> Kingdom of Albania
Aria --> Province of Harev

Makran --> Province of Makran

Aksum --> Kingdom of Aksum
Abkhazia --> Abkhazian Tribes
Caledonians --> Caledonian Confederation
Iazyges --> Hunnic Iazyges
Maurians --> Mauri Confederation
Garamantes --> Kingdom of Garama
Gaetulians --> Gaetuli
Quadians --> Quadi-Suebians
Marcomans --> Marcomanni Confederation
Ebdani --> Eblani
Bastarnians --> Bastarnae
Anteans --> Antes
Venedians --> Vistula-Veneti
Slavenians --> Sclaveni
Ghassanids --> Ghassanid Kingdom
Lakhmids --> Lakhmid Tribes
Lugians --> Lugii Confederation
Roxolanians --> Roxolani
Gaul --> Gallo-Romans
Britain --> Romano-Britains

AGE OF CHARLEMAGNE UPDATE

Now that I have become more used to the Assembly Kit, I decided to do an overhaul for AoC as well. And wow, this addon is inaccurate as hell! Not only are ALL of the Taifa-Factions completely inaccurate, due to the fact that the Taifas (Muslim Provinces basically) only came into existence in the early 1000s, but also many other factions. I renamed some of the tribes and other factions whose names made no sense. The Kingdom of Carloman and the Kingdom of Charlemagne both have been renamed to "Frankish Kingdom", simply because the old names were silly and fictional. They both still ruled over ONE Frankish Kingdom as brothers and their realms were still referred to as Frankish Kingdom by other powers. This is very similar to the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. Their first rulers were brothers, the sons of Emperor Theodosius, who divided the Roman Empire. Of course, over the time these two empires became gradually different, but they were still the same state.
While talking about the Roman Empire: the Theme of Sicily is now the Roman Empire. How silly was the old name? What was CA thinking? I am very well aware of the history of the Byzantine Empire and how it was divided into many different Themata (provinces), but it is just awkward to name an entire empire just after one province. The Theme of Sicily is just one province of the ROMAN EMPIRE, wether the rest of that Empire is visible on the map or not. Doesn't change a thing.
Apart from that, I renamed some factions like Westphalia or Bohemia into Westphalians and Bohemian Slavs. Neither of these two factions actually was a political entity in 768 AD, rather than just some tribes living in that area. Bohemia was inhabited by Slavs. I also renamed some of the Irish and British factions, simply because some names were nonsensical or modern terms, that did not exist at the time.

If you got any questions or want to criticize something, feel free to post a comment. Have fun.

Update 2024: It's been years since I made this mod and I have basically lost all knowledge about modding this game. It's officially abandoned. If any modder wants to make an updated or altered version feel free to do that. Just give me and Nox credit for our original mod and maybe paste a link to this workshop page. Thanks.

All of this is interesting, but it's been years since I made this mod and I have basically lost all knowledge about modding this game. It's officially abandoned.

About the taifas what could be done about them? They are 300 years in advance and one like emirate of granada, almost 500 years.
The taifa of Zaragoza could be renamed "Banu Qasi" (Sons of Cassius) and have some European looking units, as they were basically Basques that became muslims.

Maybe making separatist factions like Aragon, Galicia, Catalan Counties replacing their ismalic counterparts?

So true, even the early Greek rebellions in the modern era in the 1800s called themselves "Rhomaion"

All the remaining Hellenic speaking regions of the ottoman empire called itself "Roman" so much the identity remained strong, even in modern turkish these greeks born in turkey are called "Rums"

That's Not Right. The Byzantine Empire referred to themselves always as Romans and Pater as Greeks. Byzantine is a term which was Established by modern historians. (That's why Justinian wanted to reconquer Rome)

Furthermore the both "Romes" were actually still considered as ONE Empire, but with divided governments, at the start of the Attila Campaign.

Eastern Roman empire was called the Eastern Roman empire until the Western Roman empire collapsed, then they called themselves the "Byzantine empire" because there technically they coulden't call themselves the Roman empire any longer. Also, they got split, so they can't both be called the Roman empire.
