Era - 1930s / 1950s - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / Vale Tudo

The central founding figure of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Helio Gracie had trained Judo with his family, but his comparative weakness forced him to adapt the art to fit his abilities. Helio focused on the groundwork and less strenuous techniques of Judo with an eye on self-defense.

Having formed the style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Helio took to the public to prove his art, taking on martial artists of many different styles in early mixed rules fights around Brazil.
