Sakuraba's career started in the UWF-i, fighting as a lower ranked competitor. His lack of size and experience were a detriment, but it soon showed that Sakuraba had the true essence of fighting spirit, and his amateur ability paired with a natural gift for submissions ensured that the IQ fighter would eventually work his way up.

As the Japanese shoot style scene started to lose an audience, Sakuraba became Japan's biggest native star in mixed martial arts, never forgetting his roots in pro wrestling as he racked up victories with his catch-style submissions, threw flashy moves to confound opponents and fought hopelessly larger opponents.
