I also read somewhere in wikipedia that kneel fire where usually made in ranks of three (insteat of two), and the british at some period started to kneel fire in ranks of two so the first line soldier would'nt be required to knee (which does'nt seems to make any sense), but i think that would be better for another mod so players would be able to choose which ones they want.
I still think this mod Total War Fall of the Samurai is a must allong side IGdood's bayonets mod.
The ashigaru in shogun 2 are so slow at reloading that they simply dont benefit from reloading their 2 first rows to fire. They dont make it in time! Also their accuracy contributes to that when their fisrt 2 rows finally get their guns reloaded, which as I stated before is a little bit 2 late, then the second volley doesn't go of completely. Tried it on the samurai and kneelfire was immediatly much more effective than fire by rank!
STATISTICS:
kneelfire: 160-108-54 lost 20 men and then samuria broke -> faster killing speed at start gives advatnage over missile troops
fire by rank: 160-118-73-34 lost no men and enemy broke -> better against charges
