Saladin class Frigate

PROJECT SALADIN was an attempt to make a destoryer that used Enterprise class components, launched at the same time as the Enterprise class. While the Enterprise class took a relatively short time to design, build and test, the Saladin class took longer, as problems cropped up during its development. By the time USS Saladin was completed, the Enterprise was undergoing her mid life refit, and thus set back the Saladin project another 5 years. Once the Alien threat was realized, however, the Saladin and Akula classes were put at the forefront of development lines, stalling several other projects. The Saladin, however, was reclassed as a Frigate, while the Akula class was classed as the Destroyer. While having similar armament, Saladin has inferior jump range and overall ability, thus limiting her to patrols of local systems and escorting Freighters on cargo runs.
