Era - 1910s - Boxing - Heavyweight

One of boxing's original giants, Jess Willard towered over hsi competition at nearly six foot seven. A methodical counter puncher with knockout power and natural supplies of stamina and toughness, Willard was recruited to win the heavyweight title from Jack Johnson. Viewed by some as a "white hope," Willard met Johnson in 1915, and in a hundred degree day in Cuba, Willard defeated a lacksidasical Johnson to become the new champion. The Pottawatomie Giant would then hold the belt for four more years, rarely defending, and eventually losing in spectacular fashion to the up and coming Jack Dempsey.
