The famous lawman was also a referee in the sport of boxing, and indeed was said to have carried his six shooters into the ring on occasion, once even pulling them on a disobedient boxer and a rowdy crowd. He was dubiously known best for a decision between Tom Sharkey and Bob Fitzsimmons where he made an ill-received call, costing Fitzsimmons the fight on a phantom foul.
