Der Tegernsee liegt rund 50 km südlich von München in den Bayerischen Alpen und ist ein Ausflugs- und Fremdenverkehrsziel. Er zählt zu den saubersten Seen Bayerns, da bereits in den 1960er Jahren eine durchgängige Ringkanalisation um den See geschaffen wurde.

Der See liegt im Landschaftsschutzgebiet Schutz des Tegernsees und Umgebung. Er ist Eigentum des Freistaates Bayern und wird verwaltet durch die Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen.

Der See ist Teil des Stadtgebietes von Tegernsee.

Auch die übrigen vier Gemeinden des Tegernseer Tals haben Anteil am Seeufer: Gmund am Tegernsee, Rottach-Egern, Kreuth und Bad Wiessee. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen oberbayerischen Seen sind die Ufer des Tegernsees fast vollständig öffentlich zugänglich.

Häufig sind diese intensiv mit Schilf bewachsen. Der Tegernsee hat im Süden zwei größere Buchten, sowie eine Insel. Die Mangfall bildet bei Gmund am Tegernsee den Abfluss des Tegernsees.

The Tegernsee is located approximately 50 km south of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and is an excursion and tourist destination. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Bavaria, since in the 1960s a continuous ring sewer was created around the lake.

The lake is located in the protected area of the Tegernsee and surroundings. It is the property of the Free State of Bavaria and is managed by the Bavarian administration of state castles, gardens and lakes.

The lake is part of the town area of Tegernsee.

The remaining four municipalities in the Tegernsee Valley also share the lakeside: Gmund am Tegernsee, Rottach-Egern, Kreuth and bad Wiessee. In contrast to many other upper Bavarian lakes, the banks of the Tegernsee are almost entirely open to the public.

Often these are intensively covered with reeds. The Tegernsee has two larger bays in the south, as well as an island. At Gmund at the Tegernsee, the Mangfall forms the outflow of the Tegernsee.
