ok i did some research and unfortunately it seems that there is no way to get steamfriends by using lua but i got anotheridea for a serverside mod which makes you able to seperate your team in groups then i would be able to change the colour but im not familiar with the ns2 lua at the moment and it would be a project i could start working on when i got more time like in the next holydays i also got a basic idea on how i could do this and what it should be able to do. but it would be a serverside mod since the server has to send the teaminformation to each player. another idea i just got when i whote the last dot: giving you a clientside menu which gives you a list of all players on the server and you have to manually add them as friends but then i need to know on how to save this... but it wont happen the next time unless someone with more knowledge does it (i wrote it down hear to remember myself when i got time and maybe someone could make my idea so i dont have to ;) )

I have to agree with Guilhem, having a way to identify where my friends are (especially via the C map as well as the minimap) would be the most useful mod I could get my hands on, since that's often how I try to play this game, ganging up with friends and taking an area quickly.

if you mean coulouring your steamfriends it could be possible i just have to learn how to get the information whether or not a player is your steamfriend

If you can change the color of the player's friend it would be perfect :)
