Era - 1990s / 2000s - ECW / WCW / WWE

The Hardcore Icon did not begin his ECW career swinging Singapore Canes and chugging beers. As ECW went from Eastern to Extreme, thus the Sandman was born, dropping his colorful surfer attire and taking a hardcore approach to his style in the ring.

Sandman would feud with many of ECW's mainstays, from a brutal series of encounters with Raven, to Sabu to Cactus Jack to Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer, the latter which he later would form a team with in defending ECW against outsiders and turncoats.

He spent a stint in 1999 with WCW, wrestling as Hardcore Hak, but this would not last long, as WCW and the Sandman were not a good mix. He returned to ECW until the end in 2001, winning the ECW World Heavyweight title for the second time on the promotion's final PPV event, and would resurface in 2005 as part of WWE's ECW brand, but yet again, mainstream promotions and the Sandman never quite meshed well.

Although the Sandman was never the most technically sound wrestler, he got things done with his straight forward brawling. His entrance to Metallica's Enter Sandman was always a spectacle, as he marched down through the crowd, drinking beers and smashing himself in the face with his Singapore Cane.
