Playing Wanderland Like a King On A Budget
By cheekiyaya
Lets face the fact - you can't have the best of both worlds - want it easy and want it free. At least I don't think it is applicable for a free game, same for mobile app games.

I see a lot of reviews saying that the game is grindy and will eventually require you to pay to enjoy more. That is true in a way BUT if you want to play on, and don't mind real HARD WORK, I hope this "extreme" guide helps.

This guide is divided into:
1. Useful Tips & Playing Strategies
2. Gold Farming Methods divided into player level tiers (How to Earn Coins)
3. Archivist Guide
4. Send Ship Guide

If you have further questions and need help, you can always add me as Steam friend or drop a comment here.

Choosing Your DLCs
Before starting the game, or after playing the game for a while, you might want to consider getting DLCs. So which one(s) should you get?

In store rubies and coins purchases are very expensive, ranging from USD$2.99 - USD$99.99. You might not be willing to spend this amount of money to get them.

Well, good news for Steam users, there are 7 DLCs available at this point of time.

If you are from Europe, the price ranges from 1,99€ to 14,99€ (During Steam Sale, they can be between 0,49€ to 2,99€)

If you are from US, the price ranges from $1.99 to $14.99 (During Steam Sale, they range between $0.49 to $2.99)

For starting players who do not mind spending some money, I would recommend to you: Starter Pack and Armiger Pack. They are pretty affordable and useful in the game. If you get both, you would own extra 220 rubies and 22,000 gold coins compared to the rest of players.

If you wish to get more, you can consider Collector Pack or Warrior Pack. It is however more worth while to get Advance Adventurer Pack if you think it is within your budget.

UPDATED 8 JULY 2018:
It looks like they have new DLCs in store! Check out my reviews for each and every DLC if you are unsure what to buy :)

All these DLCs contain rubies and coins which would help you along the way. Use them wisely! Your resources will finish fast if you spend without thinking XD
Useful Tips and Playing Strategies #1 - #5
#1. STACK YOUR ENERGY.

Unlike conventional energy-reload model, this game allows you to stack energy above your current limt and you probably didn't realize it. By stacking, please refer to the image above - YES, this is stacking:)

Stacking energy is the first step to conquer Wanderland! If you are depending on energy reloads every time, this game will definitely be stressful for you in higher levels because you cannot enjoy playing HOS continuously, you'll always be running out of energy! So, from Day 1 onwards, start stocking up your energy - there are various ways to do so. Please read through this guide to get more insights. Sometimes, for the entire day, I don't even explore HOS, I just collect energy from Magic Well to keep for tournament use.

#2. MAGIC WELL IS EVERYTHING.

So how do you stack energy? Answer is Magic Well.

Magic Well is the source of life to live in Wanderland! Once you start stock-pilling energy till it reaches a good amount, with no shortage of energy, you can play the HOS without any worries! Over time, I actually stacked up to 20,000 energy before reaching level 20. I try to avoid spending energy as much as I can. If you do not have time to play long hours, just go to Wanderland everyday, harvest your magic well continuously every 30minutes.

Huh? If I don't search HOS, what do I do in Wanderland? You won't be bored! Refer to the guide on How to Earn Coins (Level 1 - 15).

Funding problems? The Magic Well upgrade cost increases during every upgrade. So how do you get coins? Refer to the tips below.

#3. GOLDEN IDOL FOR COINS.

In the first few levels (up to level 20), I obtained my coins from Golden Idol.

Okay, I know your concern - rubies, and you didn't buy any DLCs!

Worry not! - you will get rubies from earning achievements, leveling up, etc. If you don't use up the rubies AT ALL since the start of the game, you would be able to collect sufficiently to upgrade your Golden Idol. Refer to Tip #11 on how to earn rubies.

I am very proud to say that without any DLCs, I manage to upgrade my Golden Idol to Master level for Steam achievements (My first Wanderland DLC was purchased in 7 Oct night). So if it is possible for me, it shouldn't be a problem for you!

I stopped funding my Golden Idol at level 20 after it gets ridiculously expensive (40 rubies). I wasn't worried because I have Tournaments funding me coins. Please refer to How To Earn Coins (Level 16 - 25).

#4. PLAYING TAVERN FOR RESOURCES.

I didn't actively play Tavern till after level 19 (because I didn't really know how it functioned). For those who are still unsure what is Tavern - you need to find Tavern Cards in adventure portals and play them in Tavern. The last card paired up will be the item you get.

If you need tutorial to find Tavern Cards, please refer to Mickmane's Guide on Tavern: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1096041340

What should I get/earn in Tavern?
If you still find it stressful to fund your magic well, then you should seize every single opportunity to get coins when you can, from Tavern.

I collected and played so many Tavern Cards, I have unlocked Explorer level (coin payout is 800). If you need coins, and there are no coins available for you to choose from while playing Tavern, choose the most expensive item that you can sacrifice at the Altar (available after level 26). Remember to check the Altar sacrifice rates before you play Tavern. For more information, refer to Altar Guide.

If you have not reached level 26 or if coins are not a concern for you, then get something that you actually need or is important to you.

It is so difficult to find Tavern cards. What should I do?
It was difficult for me at first, but I found out the key to finding Tavern Cards is - don't look so hard for it!

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Sit back and look around the scene. There is no need to stare at one corner for a long time. The card will appear for 4-7 seconds. It will fade in and/or fade out. If you look too close to the screen, you can't "sense/catch" these tiny movements.

  • Linger no more than 10 seconds in the same scene. Averagely I spend 4-6 seconds per scene, then I move on to the next. If you see it, you see it. If you don't, move on!

  • Jump from portal to portal. After finding one card in Portal A, go to Portal B, then C. Repeat this cycle, do not hang out in the same portal for an extended period of time, especially after finding the card there. If you can't find, just go out, and go back in again - a couple of times. This helps to refresh the scene.

SIDE NOTE: When you find a card, please continue searching on, it tends to appear in other portals too. Each time I gather, I can get 10-15 cards continuously, from portal to portal. Once it gets difficult to find, explore your HOS or kill some enemies. Go back again after a while, the cards will reappear. I do this very often during "Find Item" tournament.

Trust me - it is not so difficult. I managed to get at least 1,000 Tavern Cards. Check out my screenshot above :)

#5. MAXIMIZE COIN & ENERGY GAIN IN HOS

It is not very noticeable but - at the top left corner of your HOS, there is a bar that goes up and down. This bar basically records your scores, fills up when you search items fast enough. However, this is not the point.

There is a chance for the bar to switch element (coin, energy or experience) after every 5-6 hidden object found. In non-timer mode, try to let the bar drop to zero after 5 hidden objects, it may reset to another element. For myself, I will only focus on energy or coins.

This is particularly useful when you are playing for "Find Item" Tournament whereby you wish to reduce your energy expenditure as much as possible. Sometimes, if you are good in toggling, you end up spending 50% of required energy only.
Useful Tips And Playing Strategies #6 - #11
#6. PLAY WHEN REQUIRED - ICE CAVE, WINDMILL & TEMPLE.

These locations require special items to enter, i.e. Tar Torch, Grains or Amethyst Rosary. With limited resources, it is difficult to afford playing these locations without multiple objectives.

Patience! Gather up all your regular quests that require you to play in these locations. There is no rush to settle them off. For myself, I will only play these scenes when required by Archivist quests, since you only have 24 hours to complete all tasks. It is hitting 2 birds with 1 stone.

#7. SPEND YOUR GEMS WISELY.

Telling you how/where to use your gems, is like telling you how you should spend your money - it is very subjective!

My advice is, do some research in the shop tab within the game. Look through carefully every item and how much it costs. If you don't have much gems (or DLCs), getting items from shop will make your Wanderland journey much harder in near future. If it is something you can explore HOS for, avoid buying them.

From my personal experience, if you do not own any DLCs yet, do not spend unnecessarily inside the shop. In my opinion, the best way to spend your gems will be:-
1. Open enemy chest to collect activators (cheapest chest @ 5 rubies)
2. Buy Potion of Wealth (please check out my Bazaar Guide on earning coins)

#8. NEED NOT UNLOCK IMMEDIATELY

It is not cheap to unlock new locations, some may require rare materials, i.e. Wooden Mask is required to unlock Tribal Tent.

Spending rubies to unlock these locations may not be the most efficient use of your rubies, if you already don't have much.

Temple, Wind Mill and Tribal Tent - I left them locked for quite a while because I was not rushing to finish up my quests. I didn't have enough resources to open them up. Especially for Temple and Tribal Tent, I think I exceeded 10 levels, still didn't unlock them at that point of time. Doesn't seem to affect gameplay. So if you don't play often and you don't have enough resources, there is no rush to unlock these locations, even if you can.

#9. POWER PLAY MODE.

Lowest energy expenditure with maximum results in gathering items.

If you want to reduce energy expenditure, focus on HOS that has the cheapest energy requirement. This is a viable tournament strategy for "Find Item" and also to achieve Explorer / Owl Sight achievements.

For example, Hunter's Hunt (28 energy), Ship Wreck (40 energy), Pier (32 energy)

Keep playing Hunter's Hunt until you have upgraded to next level in HOS. Once you have upgraded, it will become more expensive. Go for the Pier then, because it is the "new" cheapest option available for you. This is one of the methods to ensure you spend the least energy possible.

This method is recommended especially during "Find Item" tournament. Apart from that, I don't think you need to be in Power Play mode because this will totally kill your Wanderland experience.

#10. ADD FRIENDS.

Where to find friends?

Try posting and finding them here:
Post Your ID Wanderland Discussion Post

Alternatively, I have also tried to randomly add players who appeared on the tournament listing inside the game. Some of them may have changed display name. If you want people to add you, do not change your name !

What to put in your Gift and Wishes?
First - items that you need. Prepare in advance. During the drive enemy away tournament, you need to start prepping materials for sending ships. Always request items in advance because your friends do not come online every time/day. Besides, if you request during the competition, people will most likely keep the item for themselves.

Second - items that will generate you cash, and you know friends might have extras. Refer to Altar Guide.

#11. EARNING RUBIES.

Ah, the big question - where can I earn rubies?

For those who are new or not fully aware of it, you can get from:-
  • Levelling up
  • Getting Wanderland achievements
  • Winning tournaments @ Top 20 (Ruby Chest, Gold Chest, Silver Chest and Leather Chest of Challenger)
  • Completing Archivist quests
  • Activating collections (Enemy Collections and Christmas Collections)
  • Playing Tavern

To earn rubies, you need to start with coins. This is where you continue reading the next guide on how to earn coins.

How To Earn Coins (Level 1 - 15)
Welcome to Wanderland!

Rubies are important - yes - but, without coins, you can't even earn rubies!

You have just started Wanderland, and you feel like everywhere requires money and you are required to spend. This isn't fully true! Please run through Useful Tips and Playing Strategies before reading this section.

If you have done so, you will notice that my focus is on funding the magic well with coins. I will cover what seems obvious in this section, just to make sure everyone is clear.

Playing HOS
This is an obvious source for you to get coins.

Harvest Coins From Golden Idol
Golden Idol is relatively cheap in the beginning of the game. This is how I manage to earn all my coins for the first 20 levels. I know it is hard to fund it, but try to save up your rubies and make it happen. As mentioned somewhere else within the guide, I funded it up to 40 rubies, then I stopped. It is the stepping stone for my stacking-energy strategy.

Activate Collection
In the early days of your game, 500 coins are a lot! Focus your collection activation to:

  • Guild Master Badge
  • Writing Fundamentals
  • Vacation Souvenirs
  • Secret Charter

They are fairly easy to achieve. Please refer to my up-coming / already available Steam Achievement Guide on understanding further about collection. Play more HOS for weapons and drive away more enemies to get activators. At the end of the day, it is still about getting Magic Well to fund you for energy.

Do Not Spend In Shop Unnecessarily
There is no need to spend coins unnecessarily in the shop. Saving up your coins at this point of time is crucial.

Secret Strategy: Play Tavern
The best way for me to farm coins is playing Tavern. No energy required and Tavern Cards are free. You will get the chance to earn more coins when you level up your Tavern. Not every time you will get coins, but you have good chances of getting them.

In summary, try to combo all these moves above to ultimately fund your magic well. It will be a grind and strenuous. Don't worry, you will pull through! It will give you great sense of achievement when you achieve 100% Steam Achievements for this game.
How To Earn Coins (Level 16 - 25) : Tournament Guide

Congratulations for making it through to level 16!

Continue to do what you did previously, though you have to slow down on your Golden Idol if it gets pricey with rubies! Once you get 3 Steam achievements for Golden Idol, it is time to stop.

Good news for you, there is a new way to get coins starting from level 16!

LEVEL 16: TOURNAMENT

If you have followed my strategy, you would have stocked up sufficiently to play tournaments! Winning them will give you a sense of achievement, plus a lot of resources! Definitely worth trying out.

TOURNAMENT: FIND ITEM

This is where your tournament journey starts. There is no financial restriction for this particular tournament, only energy availability issue. With your stocked up energy, just go for it!
Ultimately, try to win your first Ruby Chest of Winner!

If you succeed, you will get good amount of coins, rubies and a lot of useful items. Ruby chest contains 50 rubies, 5,000 coins and many other things. Most importantly, this Find Item tournament is the stepping stone to the other two tournaments. I am sure you have gathered a lot of weapons and shipping items through searching HOS. Save them up for the up-coming tournament.

Key Pointers For "Find Item":
1. Go into Power Play Mode (refer to Useful Tips and Playing Strategies)
2. Maximize your energy earnings through HOS (refer to Useful Tips and Playing Strategies)
3. Play Tavern in between HOS exploration (to reduce boredom and to get coins to fund your well)
4. Search Adventure Portals for Tavern Cards (to reduce boredom!)

LAST-MINUTE BOOSTER
If you are at your last 10 minutes, and you want to catch up real fast to beat the one in front of you while the difference in score is probably 2-4 points - play ice cave, temple or windmill. It will be a waste of resources definitely, but chances to get tournament badge in these places are almost 90%.

FACTS OR MYTHS?
Be my Myth Buster, peeps! I need second person to validate these opinions (after various tries):

1. Use Potion. Seems easier to get tournament badges when you use potion (I used Luck Potion and/or Wealth Potion).
2. Expensive Venues. Compared to cheaper scenes, Tribal Tent and Bazaar seem to be faster in getting badges.
3. Scene Rotation. If you rotate your playing scenes from A to B to C to D...etc and not stick to just one scene, it appears to be easier to get badges.

TOURNAMENT: SEND SHIP

You would have gathered resources from previous tournament. This is where you use them!

Key Pointers For Send Ship:
1. Activate Archivist Quest (Gold Quest if you feel you can hit 3 shipments at least)
2. Be wise with your exchange items, some are just not worth it (refer Send Ship Guide)
3. You should have put up gift and wishes for shipping items before you reach this tournament.

It is not easy to win Ruby Chest for Send Ship category if you do not own any DLCs or do not have time to play the game. Getting top 60 is good enough.

TOURNAMENT: DRIVE ENEMY AWAY

Same like sending ships, you would have gathered resources from Find Item Tournament. Use them!

Key Pointers For Drive Enemy Away:
1. Try to clear off the other enemies to ensure the enemy you are looking for can spawn.
2. Skeleton and Turgs will be the easiest, so save up the weapons required to defeat them way before hand and wait for the tournament.

Not impossible to win Ruby chest for this category! If you want to know more about the enemies, please refer to my Steam Achievement Guide on the enemy collections.

If you are facing enemy spawning issue, please feedback to me about it.

TOURNAMENT REWARDS

You want to know what you can get? Here's a glimpse!

RUBY CHEST OF WINNER (1ST PLACE)

GOLD CHEST OF WINNER (2ND PLACE)

SILVER CHEST OF WINNER (3RD PLACE)
Special thanks to GEO and Chris for making me lose out first place in the tournament XD

LEATHER CHEST OF CHALLENGER (4-20)

IRON CHEST OF CHALLENGER (21-60)

How To Earn Coins (Level 26 - 35) : Altar Guide

Congratulations for reaching level 26!

Again, continue to do what you did previously, adding Tournament to your to-do list, and of course, remember to stop the Golden Idol if it is costing you a fortune!

Recommended to stop once you hit 40 rubies upgrade.

Yay! And another great way to get coins once you hit level 26.

LEVEL 26: ALTAR

Altar is a place to sacrifice your items for coins. A good place to get coins to fund your Magic Well. I have been doing this, combo-ing with winnings from tournaments.

So what is good to sacrifice?

Select wisely. Consider what are the items you want to keep and what are the items you can donate away. In general, you should avoid sacrificing rare items, like Wooden Mask, Antler of Archihorn, etc even though the payout is good. Avoid all activators too if possible.

These are the items you can consider to sacrifice:-
  • Rusty Iron Nail @ 150 coins
  • Shield @ 175 coins
  • Pendant With Holy Water @ 225 coins
  • Invisible Hat @ 225 coins
  • Talisman of Light @ 225 coins
  • Tar @ 100 coins *
  • Sailcloth @ 200 coins *
  • Anchor Chain @ 125 coins *
*You will only have abundance of these if you follow my Bazaar Guide (after level 36).

If you are really in need of coins, use your Gift and Wishes to get items from friends. I have conducted a simple test to see what items people are generally more generous in giving - surprisingly these 3 items: Talisman of Light, Invisible Hat and Pendant With Holy Water. Sacrificing the excess of your inventory will give you sufficient coins to fund your Magic Well.
How To Earn Coins (Level 36 Onwards) : Bazaar Guide

CONGRATULATIONS!
Finally - you are now ready to start the cycle of wealth :)

Reviewing actions from previous guide(s):

Golden Idol - Stop 100%, even if you are still harvesting under 40 rubies.
Tournament - continue winning to get rubies!
Altar - will be less appealing once you can earn this much coins.

LEVEL 36: BAZAAR

Welcome to Bazaar - the cash cow of Wanderland!

At first glance, nothing impressive - just probably a little more coins compared to other HOS.
Well, you are wrong! The secret behind bazaar is.....

These are what you need:

  • Daily Artifact - Crystal Fire or Dragon Cup (refer below for explanation)
  • Potion of Wealth
  • LOTS of energy in Wanderland (Bazaar requires high energy every round)
  • At least 1 hour play time

Very simple.
First, activate your Potion of Wealth. This would give you boost of 200% wealth for 1 hour. Then start playing Bazaar!

Lets do simple maths, shall we?

Current Bazaar Level: Sapient
Basic Coin Earnings: 166 coins
With Crystal Fire @ 20% more: 199 coins
With Potion of Wealth @ 200% more: 598 coins

See it to believe it!

So basically I am using 85 energy (or lesser if you earn back from HOS) to get at least 598 coins. Each scene I use roughly 30 secs.

1 hours = 3,600 secs = 120 times.
120 times x 85 energy = 10,200 energy
120 times x 598 coins = 71,760 coins

If I play super efficiently, I will be able to get 71,760 coins in a hour, spending 10,200 energy and 19 rubies. If my calculations are correct, 10,200 energy would have cost me 40,168 coins for harvesting from the well. My net profit would be...31,592 coins per hour I play. Now if you are freaking about the big numbers on energy expenditure, please refer back to the start of my guide and read from the beginning. Not impossible!

I remembered the first time playing this strategy was not too long after unlocking bazaar. Prolonged the potion twice, I managed to rake in 66,992 coins, spending 9,264 energy and 39 rubies within 2.5 hours.

Second time, I prolonged the potion 4 times, I managed to rake in 221,000 coins by spending at least 25,000 energy and 59 rubies within 4 hours. You will break your fingers by playing 4 hours straight in HOS, not recommended!

Understanding Artifact
Artifact is a daily collection piece for a period of 7 days. Once completed, the artifact will be activated and you will enjoy the benefits given by that artifact. Both Crystal Fire and Dragon Cup artifacts increase coin earnings in HOS by a certain percentage that is different everytime.

Way To Ruby Savings
Yes, you will need to use rubies to buy Potion of Wealth. However, if you activate "Jafar's Dream" collection, you will get Potion of Wealth for free! Start earning coins with the free Potion of Wealth, and when 1 hour is over, you get to prolong the effect for 40 minutes for only 10 rubies. This is one way you can save!
Archivist Guide

For newbies - Archivist is a place that you can accept treasure quests and complete your "Treasure Seeker" in Steam achievements.

List of quests you might receive:
  • Use Gulp of Fresh Water
  • Use Desert Tea
  • Use Frosted Time Tool in HOS
  • Use Divine Sight in HOS
  • Use Hand of God in HOS
  • Send gift to friends
  • Send ships
  • Drive enemy away
  • Complete HOS in a specific mode
  • Complete HOS in a specific cursed scene

There are 3 types of treasure chests available for you to choose from. Full unlock is available only after level 18. The table below shows you the differences between each chest.

IRON CHEST
is the easiest to start with in order to earn your "Treasure Seeker" achievement. With only 3 tasks, you can finish a few chests per day. However, the payoff is not very worth it and you will most likely be using up a lot of resources.

Updated Note: I actually think this could be worth while to complete in order to get send ship items.

SILVER CHEST
is recommended when you are able / have time to fulfill more quests. There will be cursed scenes requirement, so try to have sufficient curse items. The payoff is definitely better compared to Iron Chest, but still it is not an avenue to earn coins. Fighting enemy may be the reason to drag out the time you take to complete this chest. Leave the game on, this could help in enemy spawn.

GOLD CHEST
is recommended when you have sufficient resources of many things, and mostly importantly having time to play the game. Stock up on your Desert Tea. The hardest part for me to achieve is actually sending ships (maybe because I was really picky). Same issue with Silver Chest, enemy spawn rate is too low and slow, you might need to leave your game on.

OH! Before I forget, there is 50 energy cost for digging the chest by the way.

DO YOU KNOW?
Do you know that for any non-timer mode, if the scene has been cursed, it will be considered as timed mode? For example a non-timed ABC mode, if it is cursed, it will become Timed ABC Mode?

WHAT YOU CAN GET
Curious to see how the chests look like? Here's something for you!

For myself, my strategy for archivist is - I will activate Gold Chest during "Send Ship" tournament. If I am going to try sending as many ships as possible, why don't take the opportunity to settle the 3 shipments from archivist? After you completed Gold Chest, go for Silver or Iron Chest if you don't think you have enough resources to send 3 shipments. The only down part is, sometimes you might wait almost entire day for the specific enemy to spawn, AND you have yet to unlock shipment quest yet.
Send Ship Guide

It is pretty straight forward part of the game. You exchange items you have for the items the ship offers.

Due to limited resources, be smart with your exchanged items. If you just ship everything, at the end of the day, you will be losing out a lot of valuable resources.

As a guide, these are the points to consider whether the shipment is worth while or not:

1. Do you need the collection item(s) given?
2. Are the trading resources you offer, rare items? (i.e. Antler of Archihorn, Wooden Mask, etc) vs. the items you receive

For myself, I would only consider deals that are:-
  • without any collection item (I am NOT referring to activators)
  • with Gremlin Perfume
  • with Tar Torch / Grains
  • priority / urgency of getting shipment out

Here are a few examples to show you:

50-50 chance, because Pearl Seashells are quite hard to come by. But....I think would pass this because the collection item is not worth it.

Definitely NO-GO! :S No way am I wasting my resources for these!

OMG! Worst deal I have ever seen so far. Going for it will be the biggest Wanderland regret ever!

For this particular shipment, I was in a dilemma.
The offered items are pretty good - perfumes are good, and the activators are quite decent too.
However, I am offering back Antler of Archihorn, and that is very rare for me. Snow Parrot Feather as well, not super easy to get. Hmm..*thinking*

Awesome deal! Crazy not to take this deal. A must go!

To efficiently play sending ships, consider to only send ships during the tournament. Activate archivist chest at the same time, so you can get sending ship quests. As emphasized everywhere in my guide - be efficient in your every move, it may cost you coins/gold if you are reckless!

Hi @nataseben, thanks!:)

You can change the mode before you search the scene. On the mode button, there is a small refresh button on the top right. Clicking on it will prompt if you wish to switch to the next mode.

In my opinion, no, definitely not worth doing it. If you can randomly choose a mode, maybe yes; but in this case, you are only changing to the next mode, and it costs 3 rubies.

I will update the guide accordingly so you all will have an idea how it looks like :) If you have other questions about Wanderland and it is not here, perhaps you can check out this thread:

Well, I just save up all the energy to play scene after scene to get them into the right mode :) Spending rubies are not necessary in this case. But yes, if you want to switch, it will cost 3 rubies.

As for curse scenes, you can refer to my tip in the Steam Achievement Guide post that I wrote.
