The Flying Frenchman was one of the best athletes of his time, effortlessly backflipping off the top rope and cartwheeling around opponents. One would think Carpentier was all flash with such a description, but he managed to win the NWA World Heavyweight title from Lou Thesz and was the first AWA title holder, due to a dispute among the NWA officials. Carpentier also competed with Killer Kowalski, Verne Gagne and Giant Baba. He had a successful team with the legendary Bobo Brazil and also teamed with fellow acrobat Antonino Rocca.

A WW II hero, Carpentier became a Canadian citizen after the war and remained a presence in the nation even as he made a name in the States.
