"The Icon" Sting began his career in the mid-80's, then rose to fame in the late 80's in WCW. Sting, then appearing in a facepainted surfer gimmick, won his first NWA World Havyweight Championship from Ric Flair in 1990.

When Flair won the belt back from Sting in early 1991, WCW recognized Flair as the first WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Sting would win the title back a year later, the first of his six reigns with that title.

Sting was involved in the 6-man tag match at Bash at the Beach '96 that brought the start of the nWo, then feuded with the nWo for much of the next two years. During that time, Sting changed his appearance to the now-familiar Crow look and began dropping from the rafters on occasion, baseball bat in hand.

After WCW closed, Sting did not sign with WWF, instead sitting out his contract and wrestling for World Wrestling All-Stars before signing with TNA. As a member of the TNA roster, Sting won the TNA Heavyweight Title four times and the NWA Heavyweight Title once, bringing his career total to 12 world titles. Other TNA highlights included his time with the Main Event Mafia and his transition to a gimmick inspired by Heath Ledger's Joker.

After years of being recognized by many as the greatest wrestler never to step in a WWE ring, Sting intefered at Survivor Series '14, attacking Triple H and setting up a match at WrestleMania 31. Sting would lose to Triple H, but still earn a shot at the WWE Title later that year in what would end up being Sting's last match due to injury.
