"I'm fair, but I'm firm!" A standard pre-fight proclamation from one of the most respected referees in the last quarter century, and one that could be described as accurate. Joe Cortez boxed professionally in the 1960s and became a referee in 1977. He has been one of the best in the game in that duration, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.
