A high level Tae Kwan Do fighter, Pat Smith was also a strong kickboxer, having held an upset win over Andy Hug to his name. Smith had competed in a number of hybrid styles before the UFC invited him to their original tournament. His fight with Ken Shamrock, however, went quickly, as the grappler took him down and leglocked him in short order. Pat Smith's UFC 2 appearance was a bit more favorable, with an improved ground game, he tapped several opponents and eradicated Scott Morris with a frightful series of mounted elbows, but lost to Royce Gracie in the end.
