Era - 1970s / Early 1980s - WWWF

The clean cut, no nonsense All American, Bob Backlund was the WWWF's Heavyweight champion shortly after joining the organization in 1977, and would go on to hold the title over the next five years. As adept as Backlund was in the ring, many criticized him for his bland interviews. A much debated incident took place in 1979 when Antonio Inoki defeated Backlund for what was then the WWF title. Backlund won a rematch, but the match was stricken from the record books due to Inoki relinquishing his victory due to interference. Eventually, Backlund would lose his title to the Iron Sheik, departing from the WWF until his return in 1992.
