Drinking alcoholic beverages now gives you an unarmed damage buff in addition to the vanilla effects. The added effects are as follows:

Ale, Wine, Alto Wine, Nord Mead - adds 10 points unarmed damage for 30 seconds
Honningbrew Mead - adds 20 points unarmed damage for 20 sec
Black-Briar Mead - adds 15 points unarmed damage for 30 seconds
Black-Briar Reserve - adds 25 points unarmed damage for 30 seconds

The effects of different beverages stack, so if you drink with enough variety you can have some pretty competitive damage for short bursts, although the damage never approaches the ridiculousness of smithing + enchanting for traditional melee.
