Era - 1970s - WWWF / AWA

"The man of the hour, the man with the power, too sweet to be sour;" a common self-description of Superstar Billy Graham in his prime that exlemplified his extraordinary skill for self-promotion as well as the common sentiment of the fans. Graham started off as a bodybuilder, taking his considerable physique into the realm of pro wrestling, and became a trendsetter in multiple ways.

While on the wrong side of the face/heel divide, his promos still thrilled the fans. Graham's colorful attire and persona were groundbreaking in their own right. And while he condemned it later on in life, Graham was an early adopter of heavy steroid use in pro wrestling.

Superstar would become the WWWF Heavyweight champion, defeating Bruno Sammartino in a heated feud. He would also compete with the likes of Harley Race and Dusty Rhodes in a series of hard fought matches. The end of his reign came with a title match against Bob Backlund, a passing of the torch held all too shortly, and the end of the Superstar phase of Billy Graham's career in 1978.
